Meet James Randall

We recently connected with James Randall and have shared our conversation below.

James, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic was developed very early, as I am the son of an immigrant who wanted her son to be a doctor. I always excelled in school because I came home to a disciplined house that demanded homework be finished before anything else could be done. I always loved reading which made that easy. As I got older my home became more and more dysfunctional until I couldn’t wait to leave…which led me to take on two jobs in high school in order to buy a car and save for my own place. I was struck by 9/11 as was everyone, which meant taking on three jobs to afford a place and go to school. I was just determined to make it on my own with no help, considering none would be coming even if I wanted it. Struggling through the hard times made me disciplined, a discipline I take into my film making to this day.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I run Reel Unicorn Productions, a fully independent film production company that does commercials, music videos, and feature length independent films. Our TV series Funny Money is available on Amazon Prime, our film It’s Just Us is on Tubi and Plex, and our third film The Talent Process: Retribution will have a premiere at AMC theatre before hitting Prime and possibly Hulu.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Discipline is key. You have to work hard ALL of the time, not just when you feel like it. Do not be afraid to try and fail, because failure is just a step toward success. All to often, people are afraid to try something and be ridiculed. I learn best in hands on scenarios, so I just go for it. Patience is another easy key quality, because especially in film making it is a very long process from start to finish and you need to be able to reset and go into each day without carrying the pressures impatience puts upon you.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My business partner Sherman Schufford has been instrumental in helping me learn patience, and guiding me through mistakes I make. He is always there to carefully consider a situation and offer critical advice even when he knows I won’t like what he has to say.
