Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to James Thornton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have James with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic comes from 3 main places. First being my mother. As a child I watched her work multiple jobs. Some at the same time all while caring for myself and my older sister and then taking on the task of returning to and finishing school. Til this day sometimes I ask her HOW and she says I HAD TO and that’s how I feel most days. Which leads me to rwason 2 .. my children. I am the start and stop of everything with them so I have to keep going for them at all times no matter what. And in terms of music my work ethic comes from my competitive nature. I want to make the best music for me and the people who feel me so I stay studying and learning and adapting with my craft to try and unlock new moments to share with listeners
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My brand is currently expanding to a more direct to consumer theory. For a long time as rap artist we are taught that streaming and major label record deals are the main way to go. Now I run all music, merch and content directly through my site to gather contacts and work to give listeners a more personal feel. It’s about building a community so that we can come together. I want to continue to branch out into other spaces such as facilitating projects for younger artist and doing more philanthropic things in my city
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My best qualities are and weee the ability to listen and take constructive criticism as an artist you have to be open to the opinions of collaborators because everyone is working towards the goal of the best possible music. My attention to detail in presentation. I would advise younger artist to keep in mind you only get one chance at a first impression so making sure your audio and visual components are of a certain quality is key and my work ethic. Which. There is no advice for. You have to just want it.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did was believe in me. Even when it was unclear about where my journey was headed as an artist and brand they always verbally supported me. Never forced me to take a plan b route. Just having their encouragement has been one of the most powerful acts of love and inspiration
