Meet Jamezz Hampton

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jamezz Hampton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jamezz below.

Jamezz, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?

I believe my generosity comes from the grace of God. It’s not something I can take full credit for, but rather a gift I’ve received through His guidance and love. God’s grace has taught me to be compassionate, kind, and selfless in my actions toward others.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I grew up in Robbins, Illinois, where my passion for art and creativity began at a young age. Throughout my childhood, I always expressed an interest in art, but after high school, I found myself uncertain of my direction for a while. That is, until one of my best friend’s mothers invited me to my very first film set. That experience changed everything for me and eventually led me to pursue a career in film at Columbia College Chicago.

What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to give people in underserved communities a jump start into the film and video industry. I believe everyone, regardless of background, should have access to the resources and opportunities to tell their stories, and I am passionate about providing those chances. My films are designed to showcase equality, faith, and real-life stories that people can relate to. I want my work to inspire, uplift, and connect with audiences on a deeper level, offering them something meaningful and impactful.

Moving forward, I’m thrilled to continue sharing my creative journey and works with the world, and I’m always eager to collaborate with others who share a similar vision. My goal is to not only create films but to create a platform for others to rise, share their voices, and bring diverse stories to the forefront of the industry.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Resilience: There were many moments when I wasn’t sure about my direction or had to face challenges that felt overwhelming. But staying resilient, even when things seemed uncertain, kept me going. I had to learn to embrace setbacks as opportunities to grow. It’s important to recognize that the journey isn’t always linear, and perseverance is key to success.

Advice: For those just starting out, remember that setbacks are part of the process. When things don’t go as planned, use it as a chance to learn and grow stronger. Keep pushing forward, and don’t be discouraged by temporary obstacles. Persistence will eventually lead you to your breakthrough.

Networking and Relationships: One of the biggest turning points for me was being invited onto my first film set, which opened up a world of possibilities. Building meaningful relationships with mentors, peers, and others in the industry has been invaluable. These connections have not only guided me but also opened doors to collaborations and opportunities I wouldn’t have had on my own.

Advice: Don’t be afraid to reach out, ask questions, and build your network early on. Attend events, workshops, and seek out people whose work you admire. It’s not just about what you know, but who you know, and how you can support each other. Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you.

Passion and Purpose: When I found my purpose in giving people from underserved communities a chance in the film industry, my work became more than just a job—it became a mission. Understanding why you do what you do is essential to staying motivated and focused. My passion for telling stories of equality, faith, and real-life experiences continues to fuel my journey.

Advice: Find your “why.” Ask yourself what drives you and what you want to contribute to the world. Having a clear sense of purpose will help you stay grounded when things get tough and will keep you passionate about what you do. Align your work with your values, and it will bring fulfillment and greater impact.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

The Bible has played a significant role in my development, shaping my values, perspective, and approach to life. One of the key pieces of wisdom I’ve taken from it is the importance of faith, resilience, and love. Verses like Proverbs 3:5-6 (‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding’) have taught me to trust in a greater plan, even when things seem uncertain. Additionally, the teachings on kindness, forgiveness, and perseverance have guided my personal and professional journey, helping me navigate challenges with wisdom and grace.
