We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamia Fields a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jamia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Fashion is not my sole purpose, but I believe I have found a sense of purpose and passion through fashion over the years. I realized it was my passion because of how easy fashion came to me, and the joy it brings me. I am known by the people closest to me to always find unique discounted clothing ( vintage and thrifted), sneakers, or jewelry with minimal effort. For years, I have found timeless one of one pieces and discounted designer pieces, for myself, family and friends. Styling myself and others just for fun, led to being a style inspo for those around me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am so excited to announce that I have expanded my business Stoic Los Angeles and will be launching Stoic Los Angeles Style with styling and personal shopping services.
I believe fashion has been a huge part of my journey, part of my story of enduring and persevering. Over the course of my career I have been knocked down many times, countless days that I just didn’t feel like waking up, or getting out of bed. Always knowing deep down, I was meant for more but the circumstances tried to keep me down. What I started to realize is when I got up, put on an outfit that made me feel my best, I became inspired to get active and conquer the day. Even after soccer practice or the gym I would put a cute fit on just to go to the coffee shop to be creative, walk around and thrift, or honestly just to get out and about and take that next step. I was putting on an outfit to go chase my dreams. I came to the conclusion that if I got up and got dressed and took that first step, my dreams were still alive.
This is why I have decided to launch Stoic Los Angeles Style and begin an exclusive personal shopping & styling business. I know fashion does not come easy to everyone but I do know that if you’re looking your best and feeling your best, you can continue creating your dreams.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have been most impactful on my journey thus far:
-Patience
-Faith
-Hope
I have a love hate relationship with the word patience. The lesson of patience is a painful one especially when you have set high goals set for your life with a specific timing, and they don’t play out exactly how you have planned. Throughout my career I have had so many detours that have caused me to go into periods of waiting that required immense amounts of patience.
I believe in those waiting periods, in order to wait well and be patient,
patience must be accompanied by faith:
A huge part of faith to me is my faith in God. In my opinion, faith is being confident in a certain outcome without knowing how the outcome will come to pass. My faith is then accompanied by hope. I keep my dreams alive on this journey by always having hope, always expecting that something good is coming. I keep hope by continuing to create on and off the field in any waiting period I may be in. I am expectant regardless of the circumstances.
My advice to those who are early in their journey is that the journey isn’t linear. You will go into low periods when you will have to utilize patience, keep faith, and never lose hope. Find a routine of praying , meditation, journaling, reading, etc. as tools along the journey. Also, I am a firm believer in not having your identity or finding your purpose in one specific thing. I encourage everyone to utilize their talents and explore multiple industries simultaneously.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I have definitely gone all in on a couple of my strengths (soccer, fashion, business). I got drafted in 2015 to the National Women’s Soccer League, and in 2016 while I was playing for Orlando Pride, I remember the exact day I decided I would pursue my passions off the field just as hard as I pursued soccer. I did not believe it would take away from my soccer journey because I knew I had extra time I could dedicate. That day I sent in an application to model for Eastbay (owned by Footlocker), and I ended up booking shoots. I also started utilizing my social media to post fashion outfits. I began building my personal brand by reaching out to brands that aligned with me (soccer, health, fitness, fashion). I was also doing my MBA during this time that I completed in 2017. Four years later I launched my high fashion streetwear line with the idea of expanding a styling business 2 years later, which is now in 2023.
I also think it’s important to invest time in my weaknesses which will hopefully provide more opportunities in the future. I am thankful I decided to go all in on my strengths, and I am constantly inspired to continue this journey on and off the field.
