Meet Jamie Harris

We were lucky to catch up with Jamie Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamie, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I’ve always been someone who loves sharing meaningful experiences, with a deep-rooted love for music. Looking back, it all started in elementary school when I joined a handbell group. That was my first introduction to actually creating music, and it blew my mind. Songs I’d hear on the radio or on CDs, I was suddenly playing with my own hands. It was a magical feeling, like bringing the music to life.

As I grew, I joined bands and eventually found my instrument of choice: the trumpet. But after leaving my college’s band program, I found myself wondering what I really wanted to do with my life. One thing was clear—music and creating experiences were always at the center of everything I loved. So, I explored every possible avenue in music and eventually landed on becoming a DJ.

Fast forward about a year and a half, I found myself on the BIGGEST stage at my college’s homecoming, performing during prime time hours in front of 2,000–3,000 people. It was my first time performing solo in front of such a massive crowd. In that moment, controlling the energy, bringing people together, and giving them an unforgettable experience, I knew—this was it. This was my passion, my purpose.

For me, it’s all about being a gift to others—using music to create a space where people can let loose, have fun, and feel connected. That’s what I’m here to do.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

About Me and My Work
I’m a professional open-format DJ who thrives on creating unforgettable experiences through music. Originally from Dallas, Texas, I’ve been DJing for over nine years, and recently made the move to Los Angeles to take my career to the next level. Music has always been at the core of who I am, and DJing is the perfect outlet for me to share that love with others while bringing people together.

What’s Special About My Work
What sets me apart is my ability to adapt and connect with any crowd. I play a mix of hip-hop, R&B, old school, top 40, amapiano, and more, tailoring each set to fit the vibe of the moment. For me, DJing isn’t just about playing songs—it’s about creating an experience, whether it’s an intimate lounge setting or a packed festival. I want people to leave feeling like they’ve just had the time of their lives.

What’s Exciting Right Now
Right now, I’m focused on expanding my reach in the LA scene and building a reputation as a go-to DJ for major events and venues even outside this city. I’m also working on curating unique events that combine great music with unforgettable atmospheres. Going into ‘25 I’ve hired a booking agent which is new but exciting for me and my career. Looking to continue to learn and grow within myself to continue to bring the best vibes to my people. For me, it’s about pushing boundaries and elevating the standard of what a DJ can bring to an event.

What I Want People to Know
At the heart of my brand is love & connection. Music has the power to break barriers, lift spirits, and create lasting memories. My goal is to give people that—whether it’s through a night they’ll never forget or just a moment to let loose and escape. It’s not just about me as a DJ; it’s about the people and the energy we create together.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three Key Qualities/Skills That Made the Difference
1. Adaptability: Being able to read a crowd and adjust on the fly has been one of the most impactful skills I’ve developed. No two audiences are the same, and learning to sense what people need in the moment—whether it’s switching genres, changing tempo, or hyping up the energy—is what separates a good DJ from a great one.
• Advice: Practice playing for diverse audiences and experiment with different genres. Don’t box yourself in; the more versatile you are, the more opportunities you’ll create for yourself.
2. Consistency: Success doesn’t happen overnight. I’ve learned that showing up consistently—whether it’s practicing, networking, or delivering great sets—is what builds trust, skill, and momentum over time.
• Advice: Set small, achievable goals and work on them daily. Even on the days you don’t feel like it, showing up is half the battle.
3. Passion for Connection: DJing isn’t just about the music; it’s about the energy you create with people. I’ve always focused on making the crowd feel seen, heard, and a part of something bigger. That passion for connection has been my driving force.
• Advice: Always remember why you started. When you focus on creating something meaningful for others, it will naturally elevate your craft and set you apart.

For Those Early in Their Journey
No matter what, don’t give up on yourself. Although I’m not yet where I want to be, I’m much farther than I ever imagined, and that’s because I never quit. It’s not easy, but as the saying goes, nothing worth having comes easy.

Don’t be afraid to meet new people—your journey is filled with cool experiences, and networking is a huge part of that. You haven’t met every person you’re supposed to meet yet, so stay open to new connections, and don’t be discouraged when some relationships run their course.

Lastly, the most important lesson I’ve learned and love to pass on is this: the journey is more important than the destination. Growth, experiences, and challenges along the way are what truly shape you and make the destination worth it.

Take your time to build your foundation. Don’t be afraid to try different approaches, make mistakes, and learn along the way. Invest in your craft—whether it’s through equipment, education, or mentorship—and don’t forget to enjoy the process. Your unique path will shape you, so trust it.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Absolutely! I’m always open to partnering and collaborating with people who share a passion for creating unique and memorable experiences. Whether you’re a fellow creative, event organizer, brand, or venue looking for someone to bring energy and connection to your audience, I’d love to explore how we can work together.

I’m especially interested in collaborating on events that blend music, culture, and community—whether that’s through live performances, curated experiences, or creative projects. I’m also open to partnerships with brands that align with my mission of bringing people together and spreading joy through music.
