We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamie Lewis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jamie, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I’d say my confidence and self esteem tend to drastically vary from day to day really. Lately I’ve been having to dig much deeper to remind myself how far I’ve come and what I’ve been able to accomplish in my life. I gain strength from knowing that I am helping and inspiring those around me. I think the best compliment that I’ve ever received is “I’m doing this because of you.” For whatever reason or purpose, knowing I helped others feel more like themselves is everything.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
What I do. Well that’s definitely a loaded question, haha. I’d like to think I’m a creative. I don’t want to just limit my title to just “photographer” or just “writer” because I’d like to believe I’m so much more than that. I love the way I see and perceive the world through photos and my writing, and I want to share it with everyone.
It’s exciting to see how far I’ve come in just the past five years, I started just wanting to learn more about photography, but that’s such a minuscule part of it all. I want to showcase beauty, in all forms, shapes, sizes etc.
I want people to see my photos or read what I write and feel like I understand them, what they want, and how they want to be perceived in this world. We all want to be understood, right?
I’m very excited for a lot of things I have in the works for the next several months. I’ve been looking at an entire brand and business overhaul in a sense. I’ll still be doing what I love, I just want to make sure I can offer something for everyone.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think it’s very important to not get caught up in the opinions and trends of social media too much. Of course it is a necessary tool in our everyday life as a business, but as the quote says “comparison is the thief of joy”, or something like that haha.
As a creative, what you do is vulnerable, and beautiful, and important. And you should never let an algorithm convince you otherwise.
It’s not easy by any means to try and build something from the ground up, I still don’t feel fully formed. But it’s important to take your time and really make sure you love what you’re doing.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking for fellow creatives with new ideas! I want to branch out more in the editorial space, so anyone that has any ideas for themed shoots please get in touch with me on my social medias (FB: J.Lew Photography and IG: j.lew_photography)
