We were lucky to catch up with Jamie Mcnamara recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamie, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I have always been drawn to the arts and sciences throughout my life. As a child, I wanted to be an art teacher or a surgeon. I grew up in a family that heavily abused drugs and alcohol. Seeing my loved ones poison and destroy their bodies was one of the main reasons I became interested in working in healthcare and helping people. I went to college and studied Public Health with a large focus in Sexual Health and drug education. I then went on to complete my nursing degree and currently work as a bedside nurse in different hospitals. I have always dabbled in different art mediums throughout my life for fun and to calm my chaotic mind. Once the pandemic came around and I was working as a nurse, I needed a major stress relief. I began diving into my art a lot more at that time. I started making earrings from polymer clay. Then at the beginning of 2023 I had the urge to start painting. I wanted to get better at figure drawing so I started painting hands and figures slowly. Once I figured out my style with acrylic paints I decided to really focus on the topic of erotica. I wanted to incorporate my love for sexual health education, kinks, and body positivity into my work. I enjoy making colorful, whimsical paintings that make people stop and have discussions about sex that they may not previously have considered. I am quite happy with my purpose in life of caring for the sick and creating sexy art!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I love creating artwork that makes people blush, laugh, invoke discussions, or learn something new! I grew up in a Catholic family attending Catholic school for twelve years. With that in mind, I had minimal to no sexual health education growing up. I had a lot of friends who experienced sexual traumas solely due to their lack of education on the subject. So, I made it a goal of mine to help teach others around me about comprehensive sexual health education to empower them and keep them safe. This is one of my biggest reasons I love making erotic artwork. My bright, colorful, fun paintings make people stop and think about new topics. For example, my donut d**k paintings are a great way to discuss the introduction of food play with a partner in the bedroom. I enjoy painting rope beautifully wrapped around bodies. I like to highlight different body types because we are all beautiful just the way we are and sometimes we need a little reminder. I hate painting skin tones and I enjoy bright colors, which is why I choose random contrasting colors in my paintings so they pop even more.
I have started offering nudie commissions as well and am having such a fun time painting other people’s spicy pictures! I plan to continue making fun, lewd, whimsical art as I try to normalize erotic art throughout my artistic journey. Follow my instagram to keep up to date on my journey at @Art.By.Jamie.Eileen

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think my background in sexual health and working with bodies every day as a nurse has helped me so much in deciding the type of content I enjoy creating as well as helping me with proper anatomy and proportions in figure painting. Creating a style that felt easy and natural to me was important too. I didn’t want to stress myself out color matching skin tones, so I took the stress away by choosing a different color palate that didn’t make me struggle. Lastly, I think it was important to enjoy input other people gave me, but ultimately I try not to take to heart when people don’t like my art. I know it is not a topic everyone supports, but I try to ignore the haters!

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I am overwhelmed in life, I need to just go into my own little world. I have ADHD so I really prioritize giving my brain some rest time. To me, that is creating art. I like to put on music or a show in the background for some noise, and I will sit in front of my canvas and paint for 4-8 hours at a time. It comes in handy when I want to complete a work of art. But sometimes I forget to stop and do little things, like eat. I am a big advocate for taking time and prioritizing mental health, so for me, my art is a happy oasis for my brain to center itself.
