Meet Jamie Perez

We were lucky to catch up with Jamie Perez recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamie, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?

I read successful people’s stories. All of them took insurmountable risks, faced a ton of rejection and kept getting up every time they fell flat on their faces.

Your biggest dreams happen on the other side of the risk you’re scared to take. I don’t want to settle for mediocrity or going with the status quo. I’ve always had big goals and dreams and none of those things are achieved by being comfortable and safe.

If you want things that others don’t have, you have to be willing to do things that others won’t do.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I own Beyond Words Productions and focus on heartfelt and emotive video storytelling for businesses and nonprofits. Think of videos that make people care about YOU, no matter what service or product you provide. These stories are not promo videos for your organization. They’re stories about you. Stories that allow people to like, know and trust you.
I’m currently rebuilding my business in California after leaving the business I built so successfully in Wisconsin. I was living there for a while as a TV news reporter then became an entrepreneur and started my own video production business. After finding myself in an abusive relationship, I decided to leave my life there and start over in California where I grew up. This year has brought many challenges, changes and pivots. But I’m still working every day to rebuild even stronger and better than before. As much as life circumstances could have forced me down, I can’t stay down. I’m excited to see how my business grows and hope that something will happen for me that even my wildest dreams couldn’t predict.

Right now, I’m not only promoting the video production side of my business, but also consulting and public speaking as well. I want to start teaching others how to become better storytellers, and part of that starts by sharing my own story on stages internationally.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Take each no as a learning opportunity – The amount of endless rejection you will face is the reason why so many people quit. This path is not for everyone. You have to have a very thick skin because people will be people. What’s meant for you WILL be there for you. No one can take those things away. Every no is guiding you to the yes you’re meant to receive.

It’s okay to fail. But keep getting back up and getting better each time – If you are unwilling to fail, you are unwilling to succeed. The difference between people who make it and people who don’t is the amount of times they failed and continued to get back up.

Don’t take criticism from people you would never go to for advice – Everyone has an opinion on how you should run your business. Only take the comments that you find valuable and that truly align with where you want to go.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?

I would still be doing what I’m doing now. Impacting people through learning emotional intelligence, empathy and connection. This is not just my career, it’s my passion. I’m working on a speaking career where I can influence more people from stages around the world to teach them the power of storytelling, the power of authenticity, vulnerability and sharing your truth. I want people to feel more connected through emotion. I truly believe the world would be better if we could do more of this.
