Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamie Poe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jamie , we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
Like most things, I’ve learned that if you want to accomplish something you just need to be consistently good to achieve great results. So for me, exercising 4-5 days a week is a non-negotiable. To quote Bob Iger, I do it for “sanity, vanity, and health,” although I believe he places vanity first. It makes every challenge more tolerable, it makes me a more patient parent, and gives me a sense of accomplishment everytime.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Poe & Co. Folk Foods is a line of all vegan, just-add-water, camping meals aimed to get more people outside! Dried camping meals is a category that has been long dominated by legacy players, with not a lot of innovation. As chefs, we saw a white space in the market for meals that have a modern, elevated, plant-based spin. Our meals are shelf stable for 2 years- you pour boiling water in the bag and eat them right out of there. They contain to artificial preservatives or flavors, and contain no silica gel (which creates a ton of ocean /landfill waste). We currently have 3 skus: Black Garlic Ramen Bowl, Sweet Potato Quinoa Skillet, and a Coconut Chickpea Stew and plan to debut a savory breakfast item this year.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think it’s really easy to get overwhelmed, fall into analysis paralysis, and then never accomplish what you set to do. Done is better than perfect, and you can always edit forward. I’m a big fan of realistic to-do lists: if it’s written down, it’s easier to focus on a task. Also, adopting an “I don’t know but I will be able to figure it out” mindset is crucial. I think anything big should be reversed engineered into very manageable tasks, then just focus on each actionable step.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Poe & Co. Folk Foods is our second business, our Santa Barbara-based catering and meal delivery business is our primary job. Between that and our 2 small kids, finding time to push forward is really challenging. It’s forced a whole new level of goal-setting, prioritization, and optimization. We have to be really focused on where we spend our energy.
