We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamie Tolbert a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I have learned that being the only one that looks like you in the room is an opportunity to change the narrative and erase stereotypes. There are so many assumptions made about others based on their race, sexual preference, gender, etc. and I believe that we all have unique opportunities to influence someone’s perception. I am proud to be a Black Lesbian and represent that in any room that I am in. There are many times that I am the only person of color in a space or the only member of the LGBT community but I capitalize on those opportunities by engaging with the people in the space. Others may be intimidated by an atmosphere like that and will choose to not engage but unfortunately, the stereotypes continue to exist by doing that. These occurrences have only happened occasionally but it is important to be that representative for your respective community when the situation arises.
There is a story that comes to me that occurred while I was attending college at Morehead State University. I sat next to a guy in Biology class that I later found out had never been around a Black person. When I first sat next to him, he seemed uneasy but I thought it was just the Freshman jitters so I just smiled at him and introduced myself. He acknowledged me and introduced himself as well. As the semester progressed, we spoke more and more with conversations ranging from sports, campus life, music and more. At the end of the semester, he looked me in the face and said “Jamie, I have never been around black people before and I had so many stereotypes in my head but I appreciate you for showing me that I was wrong.” I did not know what to say because that had never happened to me and race had never been an issue in my life. So I just looked at him and said “Dude, we clearly have so much more in common than the one thing that makes us look different but I am glad that we had these moments!” I hope that our experience opened his mind and gave him a different perception of Black people.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I love the diversity in services that my company provides and our goal is to prioritize our client’s needs to ensure that they get exceptional service at reasonable rates. Being a small business owner is hard at times but we feel that by working together, we can create unforgettable experiences.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think that the 3 things that have guided me through my journey are communication, open-mindness and keeping faith.
Sometimes I think people forget that communication is key in all relationships. Being authentic and transparent with my communication has allowed me to foster many relationships. Effective communications has a direct correlation with a person’s feelings and people never forget how you make them feel. At times I feel like communication is a lost art form and that may be why there is discord at times. Keeping clear communication helps clear up confusion, it sets expectations and leaves so much room for growth.
I believe that having an open mind allows you to grow in so many ways. When you have an open mind, the boundaries are endless with who you meet, spaces you are invited to and future conversations. When our minds are closed, we do not entertain the thought of exiting the box we have placed ourselves in. With an open mind, you can learn so much more about people and their beliefs, cultures and life experiences. Keeping an open mind allows you to learn so much along your journey and it can be valuable when you are at a bump in the road.
Keeping faith is essential to your advancement on your journey. It is easy to quit and give up when it gets hard. You will never know what will become of your efforts if you quit. Faith is what keeps you going and sometimes it is hard to maintain but the reward is bountiful. There have been times that I wanted to give up on my dreams but I have faith in the work that I am doing so it makes it hard for me to give up. Keep faith and you will go a long way!

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I have had the pleasure of being in presence of many great mentors and wise people but my wife, Chavonna, has helped me the most in overcoming challenges. She is very straightforward and honest and it comes from a place of love. I respect her so much for being so authentic, even when I don’t want to face the truth. We have those uncomfortable conversations that essentially allows us both to grow in so many ways. Her solid advice and honesty allows me to see other perspectives of situations. It also gives me the confidence necessary to push forward in challenging situations. My journey has not always been easy but I am thankful that I have someone to help me when I am in need of an extra push or the truth with no chaser, lol.
