We were lucky to catch up with Jamila Teasley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamila, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose in life through life experiences and the drive instilled in me by my family. I have overcome many challenges in life until this day but those challenges help me realize that my purpose in life is to inspire others to achieve their goals, dreams, and aspirations. For many years, I have encouraged, inspired, and supported others through life events just as many people impact me along my journey. January 6th, 2023 was the day I asked God, “why”. That day was the most challenging day to overcome in my entire life. While working in my shop I received a phone call that crushed my world. My father had took his last breath while being transported to the hospital. Working through such a pain is beyond challenging. It devastated me that I could not be there for him at that very moment. But instead of closing for the remaining work day I took a moment to stop and pray for strength to carry out the rest of the day. Now, I believe that the lessons God gives us should never be answered in a “why” but should be answered by asking, “What are you trying to show me?”. With this, I never question the purpose God sets out for me to take.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The services I perform and specialize in consist of applying mink eyelashes, body hair removal, and beard treatments. I am known on Instagram and Styleseat for specializing in eyelashes and being a serial entrepreneur. What I love most about my craft is putting a smile on my client’s faces and creating a bond with them which tend to turn into a friendship. I take pride in my work and making my clients happy.
I am most proud of staying open through the pandemic, maintaining my clientele, the expansion of my business, and starting a new business venture. Mink’d Effect Beauty has also added a new product to our local lash store and online, known as, “lash primer”. We are excited to announce that Mink’d Effect Beauty webpage is undergoing a revamp to make it easier for our customers and clients book an appointment as well as buy any lash products they may need. I have also taken part in becoming a host on Airbnb to create another stream of income. We are now working to assist others in finding remote jobs.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The areas of knowledge would be having the will power to fight through various emotions, doubting my capability to succeed, and my daily struggle to push pass my heartbreak in losing my father. Facing failure was a big obstacle for me, due to the fear of diving into unknown territories that I have not experienced before. Along with developing patience to see my success and goals manifest while focusing on accomplishing my dreams. The advice I would offer individuals who are early in their journey in terms of how they could best develop or improve would be to set boundaries to avoid as many distractions as possible; when you lose focus tap into your faith and ask God to give you strength to continue to press through, stay away from people that want to deter you of your dreams, surround yourself around positive people that have your best interest at heart by praying with and giving you positive advise.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Things I have learned to do when I am feeling overwhelmed is pause with whatever I am doing and take a deep breath. I try to focus on my health by exercising and juicing on days I decide to reset from my everyday routine. However, when an individual is feeling overwhelmed I feel it’s best to focus on yourself mentally, physically, and spiritually.
