We recently connected with Jamillah Hankerson and have shared our conversation below.
Jamillah , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I believe a big portion of my resilience is rooted in the world still moving forward. No matter how difficult moments in your life may feel, the world still moves on. Sometimes, we experience moments that make us feel as if our world is over.
Seeing the seasons change, the dates pass and people still living will show you life still presses on. Your bills will still come in the same time each month and the people that rely on you will still need you.
It all comes down to making a choice each day to work toward the things you need and want. During the moments I want to give up, I think about how things in my life would look and feel if I don’t change anything. It hurts more to stay stagnant than the pain of building myself and moving forward. I may as well move forward. We do that one decision at a time.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a 90’s baby born and raised in the vibrant city of New York. With a diverse background spanning multiple industries, including Esthetics, Skincare, Education, Visual Arts, theatre, and assistant work.
Driven by a passion for nurturing creativity, I dedicated my life so far to assisting creatives in turning their visions into reality. Through collaboration with musicians, writers, artists, educators, and actors, I have successfully contributed to a wide range of projects.
With an unwavering commitment to excellence and a keen eye for detail, I enjoy going above and beyond to ensure that every project I’m on receives the attention it deserves. With the ability to adapt to different creative processes and my innate understanding of the industry. I believe I’ve made myself an invaluable asset to any creative endeavor I’m attached to.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I had to develop a skill of not taking things so personally. It truly helps your journey go smoother entering into any situation with that mindset. Although, you are the main character in your life, that doesn’t apply to everyone else. Each person is a main character as well. The person that’s on their mind is themselves. Best to be mindful of the ways you show up in the world around you.
Another important skill I had to develop was to work through my feelings. There are times we have deadlines that must be met as a business owner. As humans, sometimes we wake up and just don’t have the will to do the task on our list for the day. The more you develop the habit of working on your list anyway, despite how you feel, you will always win.
One of the key skills I had to learn was to work on my inner dialogue. Being mindful of the words we speak to ourselves is important. You need to be your biggest cheerleader in life. It’s important that you speak to yourself as you would to your best friend, with love (I’d hope!!).
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes! I am always looking to collaborate with fellow creatives across any industry!
If I am to collaborate with anyone, they need to have confidence in their dreams. Having a big vision will be the thing that keeps a creative going.
It takes a lot of energy to make an idea come to life, I believe with the right execution of planning I can partner with a creative across any industry. I’m always up for the challenge. I’m a big fan of learning on the job. You never know what you are and aren’t able to do until you do it!
Happy creating everyone!
