We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jan Metternich. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jan below.
Jan, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
I really have no idea where it comes from but I always had the dream to become successful with music. I make music for my whole life and my biggest role models always used to be musicians. I first started to play the guitar when I was 7 years old and from that time I always tried to develop my music skills. In the meantime I started a few more hobbies like tennis and soccer. Of course I also wanted to be the best at these but I couldn’t do all of that. Music was always my main passion so I focused on that for 6 years straight now.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Jan Metternich and my passion is to write songs. I would describe my music as pop rap. I’m completely independent and founded my own label “JM303” where I released all of my songs through. I started to record my first songs when I was 12 and released my first one only 3 years ago. Now all of my songs are streamed more than 100,000,000 times all over the world. I still haven’t released a full album but will drop it in the beginning of next year.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I wouldn’t say I’m a really good singer or really good at playing instruments but I just try to write good songs which I think is also most important. My knowledge of music marketing became better and better over the years and I just never stopped trying. My biggest advice for younger artists is to never stop and fight for you dreams to come true.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin inspired me a lot. I got it from an artist friend of mine “PTM” this year and it really gave me a new way of seeing things.
