Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jan Sullivan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jan, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I come from a long line of hard workers. My parents raised seven children, all of whom are hard workers; we all had to do our chores to keep the family going. My grandparents, aunts and uncles were all great examples of working hard and being honest in your business dealings. I carry that forward in R&J Cabinetry to make sure I take care of our customers, following up on questions, problems, etc. to make sure they love their finished project.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m happy to say I’m in the design business, and more specifically, all about cabinetry! In years past, cabinetry was only about making boxes fit on the wall. Now there are many options, beautiful and helpful, that can make the difference between a good, standard kitchen and one that completely changes your kitchen experience. My expertise is laying out new kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, laundry cabinets, basement cabinets, home office cabinets – any room of the house cabinets.. You need to know the placement and specifics of storage options that will work best for your personal needs and wants. I help you lay out kitchen work stations for baking, food prep, coffee, beverage, etc. I bring in the elements that are researched and time-tested for best efficiency and pleasure for home chefs, families, entertaining and more; whatever your lifestyle, we fit your kitchen and other spaces to your specific way of life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Curiosity. Sometimes we get stuck in a rut thinking there is only one way. Design is all about individuality, meaning the customer you are working with should feel seen and heard. Ask questions of them, and of design, itself.
2. Tenacity. The easy road can look very inviting, but keeping at it just a little longer can make the difference between good and great design.
3. Practice. I consider my work all about practice. It will never be complete – there is always more to learn. I am an expert, which means I recognize I am well on my way and enjoying the journey, but I don’t claim perfection. That would be boring and untrue. There is always more to learn.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I enjoy collaborating with Interior Designers, contractors, re-modelers, fix-n-flippers, realtors, etc.. They have the whole house to think about; I simply focus on the cabinetry layout, taking responsibility for correct dimensions and cabinetry that fits in the room and works correctly, along with the obvious aesthetically gorgeous cabinets everyone wants. Working together means they can trust the details of their design concept to me, bringing it to life for their customers.
