Meet Janak Narayan

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Janak Narayan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Janak below.

Janak, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

I am an ‘artprenuer’ today but I have been a creative person all my life. I believe that creativity is not something that is to be taken for granted. It is an innate gift – an aptitude that is given to us. It has to be nurtured to keep the skill honed. For the first 25 years of my career I was in the banking and Finance industry. A health setback got me rethinking my life and purpose. So as a Creative I plunged head first into going back to school and completed my BFA in painting, in 2015. Over the five years of school I realized that my creativity contributed very little towards my success as an artist. My success came from persistence and consistency. So I decided to make lifestyle changes to be a successful Creative.

To keep my creativity alive I realized that I need to be creative EVERYDAY. I may not feel creative enough to paint but it is all about disciple. If I don’t feel like painting, I drive around town taking pictures or go on Youtube and be inspired by works of other artist or check out an online art video or pull out my sketch book to get me fired up. The idea is to be prolific and work towards your art daily in some form or other.

I keep my creativity alive by not being fearful of failure. Every composition is a happy accident in some form! The more I paint the better I get and more creative ideas evolve through my brushwork. It is all about practice, practice, practice!

Lastly, It is my personal belief that creativity should be spontaneous, meditative, soul satisfying and one should keep moving through composition and not try to make a masterpiece right off the bat…one may have to wait a lifetime. In the meanwhile enjoy the journey.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a visual artist and I focus on painting in oil and acrylic primarily. I am exploring new boundaries to express myself through my art.

The last 5 years have been a journey in discovering ‘Who am I?” My art and my spiritual core have come together. We now have a common journey, and it’s beautiful. I am my art and my art is me.

My time is divided between studio work, art festivals, shows, exhibitions, solo events, fundraisers for charitable causes and interacting with my audience on the social media platforms.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I am passionate, persistent and very goal oriented by nature. My gypsy spirit and spontaneous nature is wrapped in these three qualities and that is why I feel I have both a unique style and persona that I embrace in abandon.

My advice is simple – be your true YOU. Stay thirsty and you will go far. Passion is a must.

“I paint sometimes as I see it, other times as I imagine it – but always because I am loving it”

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Thank you for asking this very pertinent question!

As an artist I realize I have reached a certain critical mass and am ready to take larger leaps of faith. I prefer to paint large compositions of contemporary landscapes that gently straddle the twilight area between representational art and abstraction.

I would love to move into commercial space. I am eternally indebted to my individual collectors but now I want to do larger projects with organizations like the hospitality industry, banks, hospitals, restaurants, city art projects, airports and resorts to name a few. I am confident working on large works and would love to collaborate with any organization to custom create a work of unique on of a kind art for them.

Please reach out to me and let us brainstorm about bringing JOY & HEALING all around!
