Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jane Strausman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jane, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
In session work, I have done multiple sessions with only men. Where there is not another woman in the room. Wether this is in songwriting or production, I just remember that I can do anything they can do. Women can produce, write, and mix their own material. This is what I strive to prove every time I walk in a room. I remember that I have something to offer, and when it comes down to it, I have a different perspective than everybody in the room. I am bringing a new lens to the creative space that I am in.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Jane Honor and I am an artist! I write music, record it, and release it on streaming platforms. My music is Alternative, but I take inspiration from all genres, some include: Rock, R&B, and musical theater. I feel my music is special because I write my own stories. Every person on this planet has lived a different life, and I feel like mine is relatable while still being uniquely my own. I’ve written fun songs, as well as songs that go deeper and really challenge me. I released my album “Spiraling in Central Park” in 2022 about the complications of growing up in New York City. I am now working on my second full length project that will be out in 2023. I hope you like it!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think my three superpowers are my songwriting, my quirkiness, and the people in my life. Above all, I know I was put on earth to write songs. It has always been my favorite thing about music and life. I write all my songs by myself and am proud of what I come up with. My lyrics are a reflection of me, and if you want to get to know me, listen to my songs. My quirkiness has been prevalent in my music and I think it makes me stand out as an artist. I’m not afraid to randomly hit a bad note, or say a line that won’t make sense. I believe my songs are in my own language. I take a lot of inspiration from Regina Spektor, who makes dolphin sounds in her songs and calls herself a Reginasauras. Being as weird as you can is the most freeing part about art. Lastly the people in my life give me all my inspiration, my friends, family, even people I briefly meet. I get inspired by other people’s stories, and my relationships to people. Without people I wouldn’t have any songs.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always looking for people to collaborate with! I sometimes pride myself on doing stuff on my own, but an artist project takes an army of people. I would love to connect with music producers, for a new perspective. Also artists like photographers, graphic designers, website creators. I love seeing the ideas in my head come to life, and these people make it happen.
