Meet Janelle Sy’mone

We were lucky to catch up with Janelle Sy’mone recently and have shared our conversation below.

Janelle , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

Developed? More like developing…
The confidence I have so far has been generated from a point of survival. “Never Let Them See You Sweat”—-but I’m shifting my confidence from being merely performative to being purposeful. I’m owning and discovering who I am everyday and this has allowed me to fall in love with the same parts of myself that I’m discovering. My confidence is directly linked to the love I have manifested and invested in myself.
As I say, “ Being alive is a privilege, but being me is an honor and I can never forget that.”

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a singer, songwriter, and performer who creates music rooted in soul, R&B, and blues, with influences from the greats I grew up listening to like Anita Baker, The Isley Brothers, and Frankie Beverly. My journey started in Georgia, where I discovered that music wasn’t just something I loved — it was the way I connected with myself and with others.

What excites me most about what I do is the ability to tell real, vulnerable stories through my art. Whether it’s joy, heartbreak, resilience, or celebration, I want my music to be a space where people feel seen and inspired. For me, the stage is more than a platform — it’s a place to create a full experience that blends powerful vocals, movement, and energy that audiences can truly feel.

Right now, I’m focused on growing my artistry and expanding my reach. My debut EP Good Girl was an important milestone, and since then I’ve had the chance to perform at events like Taste of Soul Atlanta and Charlotte Shout, which reminded me just how impactful live music can be. I’m currently working on new music that dives even deeper into my story and my sound — and I’m excited to share it with the world soon.

At the heart of it, my brand is about authenticity, empowerment, and connection. I want my work to remind people that no matter what they’re going through, there’s always beauty and strength in the journey.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three qualities that continue to help me out is determination , delusion and discernment. When I started music, I made an internal contract with myself that I’d fight for my dream tooth and nail—that there was no world where I could give up.—ever! But truthfully, to be this determined you also have to be a bit deluded in your belief system. Reality doesn’t bode well for dreamers because every dream takes a bit of delusion and irrationality to work. You have to basically trust what’s not there yet. And the there’s discernment—knowing who and what to have around you. Whatever or whomever it is needs to feed your dream and fill your cup.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

My number one pitfall has always been confidence. Don’t get me wrong, when I’m on That stage and in front of those people, it’s like I have access to an endless supply of it, but it’s during the creation process, the moments before I post a video or a new song or when I’m showing something new that I’ve done. Confidence is directly connected self worth and I’m not going to lie—I’m still appraising myself. It’s a fascinating thing of self discovery and the more I learn the more I love and the more I love of myself the more confident I become.
