We were lucky to catch up with Janene Grende recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Janene, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re very focused on here – improving our ability to make decisions. Everyday, we’re faced with decisions that can impact the future of our careers, businesses, relationships and more and so one of the most impactful areas for personal development, in our view, is decision-making. Can you talk to us about how you developed or improved your decision-making skills?
From observations of others, I don’t have to make choices that I’ve seen others fail at. Vice-versa I learn what has made others successful and work at that path.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I enjoy many mediums and interesting styles from painting on silk an ancient art to oils, acrylics and gouache. All lend itself to a new exciting path to a finished painting. I especially enjoy those small moments where animals or birds interact with one another. Being a realistic artist lm trying to make every brush stroke count without dabbling a painting to death. The flow of the art has become a goal.
I am a Wild Wings artist and have 2 new paintings launching under their art brand line. The Golden Hour and Solstice Dawn.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Being aware, notice your surroundings how the light filters through the trees, how the distant clouds have bold colors refective and direct, how a droplet of water glistens even on a misty morning. Paint from life and nature, if you are painting animals practice from life on your own pets. A cat can relate in structure to a panther, a dog to a wolf…well maybe not a chihuahua, ha ha
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Being overwhelmed is a beast you can conquer. If it is a single painting I turn it around then ignore it for a day then turn it around walk away then glance at it, squint all those silly things but usually what was bothering me pops out. Another thing is going for a walk to clear your mind. But I’m extremely lucky as I can go saddle my horse and ride. I ride in an activity called dressage. It is a layering of skills with your horse to develop a fluid partnership with certain movements. It is so like the development of a finished painting. An underpainting over an acurate sketch, then add the right strokes to the mystery and finesse, flow and rhythm of the art.
