Meet Janet Kristy

We were lucky to catch up with Janet Kristy recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Janet , thank you so much for agreeing to open up about a sensitive and personal topic like being fired or laid-off. Unfortunately, there has been a rise in layoffs recently and so your insight and experience with overcoming being let go is relevant to so many in the community.

In 2009, during the housing crisis, I was laid off from my role as a new home sales consultant. I was at a crossroads and unsure of my next move. Before my six years in real estate, I had worked as a bartender and blackjack dealer in Las Vegas, but with no plans to return there, I needed a new direction. At the time, I was single with a mortgage, so I had to quickly find a way to make ends meet. To cover the bills, I took on two temporary jobs: one at the Franchise Tax Board and another at a department store.

Then, out of the blue, a friend reached out. She had just completed a spray tanning course and was looking for practice models. Although I had never heard of spray tanning before, I agreed to help—and after seeing the results on my own skin, I was hooked. I asked my friend if she would mind me pursuing spray tanning, especially since we lived two hours apart and wouldn’t be in competition. She gave me her blessing, and that’s how it all began. Fifteen years later, here I am, running a successful spray tanning business

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

After 13 years of nurturing my business in California, we moved to Indiana so I’ve spent the last 18 months introducing my business to the wonderful people of the Midwest. What excites me most about it is the new friends I’ve made and the confidence boost I get to help provide to my clients. Whether it’s for a special event or just to feel better in their own skin, I love being able to create a natural-looking glow that enhances how they feel about themselves. Spray tanning is more than just a service; it’s an experience that helps people feel radiant, healthy, and empowered.

The special part of my business is the personalized approach I take with every client. I don’t just aim for a perfect tan, but I work to understand their skin type, tone preferences, and what makes them feel confident. Over the years, I’ve built relationships with my clients, and seeing them return and love their results brings me so much joy.

As for what’s new, I’m constantly looking for ways to grow and improve the business. One exciting thing I’ve been focusing on recently is expanding my online presence. With my new account hitting the 1000-follower mark on Instagram, I’m connecting with even more people and sharing tips, client transformations, and educational content. This helps me engage with a wider audience and bring more attention to the benefits of spray tanning. I’m also looking into introducing new products and services that will complement the tanning experience and elevate the self-care rituals of my clients.

The journey has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited to see where the next steps take me!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

How would you describe your ideal client?

My ideal client is someone who values self-care, confidence, and is open to enhancing their natural beauty through a personalized, high-quality spray tanning experience. I work with people who are looking for a natural glow, whether for a special occasion or just as part of their regular self-care routine. Ideal clients are those who trust the process, appreciate the attention to detail I bring to every session, and are excited about seeing their best self reflected back to them.

The characteristics that make someone an ideal client for me include a positive attitude, clear communication about their goals, and a willingness to embrace the tanning process as part of their self-care journey. Whether it’s someone new to tanning or a long-time client, I love working with people who are enthusiastic about how a great tan can make them feel more confident and refreshed.

I also value clients who are loyal and return regularly, as this allows me to develop a deeper understanding of their preferences and skin needs, ensuring a consistent and personalized experience.
