Meet Janet Tillman

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janet Tillman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Janet, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

My optimism comes from:
•Time, wisdom and age
• My faith: I have been guided by the belief that there is always resources available to me—money, a place to live, people to talk to and food to eat. That ties into my other beliefs that: 1. Things always work out. 2. Everything is temporary. 3. When I engage in life with a childlike curiosity and wonder, it helps me to deal with challenges easier. 4. I have many people in my life who are available to support me–no mater what. 5. Attending lots of transformational workshops/courses: Heart and Soul Center of Light, Landmark Education, Challenge Day, Debbie Ford’s work, Core Connections, etc. have helped shape who I am.

AND, I LOVE being alive. There are so many opportunities to be grateful for and to experience life newly/from different perspectives.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I seek and create opportunities to work with individuals and organization where I can bring my abundance of skills, curiosities, and, they are welcomed. Being able to make a significant impact on organizations and individuals inside of partnership matters to me. I am a natural and committed coach. Working with people to free themselves from the blocks they have, the limiting beliefs that have them experience disappointment, confusion, resignation and more. I ask questions and listen to what is important to them. Then, I reflect back what they’ve said so that they can see the gaps between what is actually happening, what/where they want to go. Then, we identify what actions could be taken to get the desired results. Currently I am working with: Clean Footprint, a clean energy company. EMT (Evaluation, Management & Associates) where I am a facilitator of the “Brief Intervention (BI)” process where I train adults who work with middle/high school students who are experimenting with alcohol, drugs or tobacco. The BI process is an alternative to suspension and is a safe place for students to share why/what/how they use and if they are open to reducing use or quitting altogether. I also work with individual coaching clients. I am currently accepting additional coaching clients.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Having faith that everything will work out regardless of how things appear.
2. Knowing that everyone wants to be listened to, known and celebrated for who they are.
3. Listening is just as important as speaking.
My advice is to slow down and reflect over your life. Look for the blessings that surround you all the time. Give thanks for all the people, places and experience you’ve had—they are all gifts. Without the challenges/upsets we would not have developed strong resiliency skills and be the people we are today.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

They gave me the precious gift of life. Beyond that, they taught me the importance of integrity, family and seeking/speaking my truth. Both of my parents were generous, loving, and very different from one another. I learned about compassion, resiliency, and persistence.
