We recently connected with Janey Street and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Janey , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I started planing guitar. singing and writing songs by the age of 10. My big brother was a great piano player, guitarist and singer and I guess I wanted to be just like him. Also I grew up with the Beatles and Motown , The Vietnam war and the Civil rights movement was something we were all a part of. It brought a lot of people together like the greats , Bob Dylan, the famous Woodstock festival, etc. It was my generation. That’s what inspired me the most. I was a just a NY street kid and I wasn’t much into academia . When I was really young in grade school I didn’t have a lot of friends. By the time I hit the 5th grade and got up with my guitar and sang for the talent show, all the kids flipped out and everyone wanted to be my friend. I think that more than anything else, is where I found my purpose..
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a singer/songwriter and have been all my life. I’ve had major record deals, with Warner Bros., Capital and signed with Clive Davis on Arista records, Not too long ago, I did two records for a new record label based in LA.. It was great to be back in the studio cutting songs I had written for me as an artist after a long stretch of producing and writing behind the scenes.. I had some success with my hit song, ” Under The Clock” back in the 80s, In the late 90s, I took a few trips to Nashville and wrote with all the big writers and just fell in love with Nashville so I moved here to write for other artists. That was fine with me. I also did and independent blues record here in Nashville. You could find my music on Spotify, Apple Music , YouTube and all the social media platforms. These days, I have been writing a feature film screenplay that’s fictional but somewhat autobiographical about the kind of life I have lived.. I plan on pitching my script and getting back on tour late fall early winter.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think I learned a lot at a very early age. Songwriting and singing came naturally to me. I never read books on how to write songs. I encourage young artists writers and songwriters to write about what you feel and learn the craft. Write like a song like what you would love to listen to in your own way. When it comes to performing, that always came naturally for me as well. It’s important to know your songs or what ever songs you are performing so well, you don’t have to think about it so when you are on stage, you can just concentrate on your performance. Be prepared. Also, if you make a mistake , just keep going. The audience will not notice.
I try to treat people with respect whether they could be beneficial to my career or not. I think that is an important part of who you are in life and business.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I have been in my business for a long time. I have met writers, producers, record executives , great musicians and many other people in my business that has helped me on my path.. Just doing what you are doing and communicating with other people that have been doing it longer than you will always have an impact. I have too many great mentors to mention only one,
