We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Janina Souders. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Janina below.
Hi Janina, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
When I find myself in a creative block, the first thing I try to do is take a step back and clear my mind. Taking some time away to focus on something else, whether it is another project, something I am doing with my family, or some sort of self care, often helps me to get a new perspective on what is blocking my creativity. Some other things I try to do when I feel myself at a loss for words or ideas, is to get out and move. Taking walks outside in nature helps me to decompress so that I can come back to whatever I am working on with clarity.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a graphic designer who focuses on website development, social media and email campaigns, and UX design. What I find most exciting about what I do is the fact that I get to use my creative side to capture an audience, or sell a product. Whether it is a product or a service, I find joy in coming up with different strategies to reach an audience. I also enjoy sharing my passion with my two daughters, who love to participate in anything artisitic.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities or skills I have found to be impactful on my journey are: 1. Keep up with what is relevant. It is important to keep up on trends and what is popular at the moment to be able to recognize different ways to reach your audience.
2. Learn as much as you can with various platforms, strategies, etc. There are many different platforms you can work with in the design field, and no one platform is the same. I like finding different aspects in each that can help me to create and relay the message I am trying to send.
3. Be able to adapt to change. Whether it is a change in your field that impacts the work you do, or something that changes your strategy, it is important to be able to adapt to change as many aspects in the design field are ever changing.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would love to meet and possibly collaborate with other people in the creative community! Whether it’s doing something just for fun or working on a side project, I think it would be a good opportunity to meet new people and gain a different perspective.
