We were lucky to catch up with Janine Jarman recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Janine, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
So, I am extremely short with a loud and raspy voice that always comes as a shock to people. Regardless of the fact that there’s always comments flying around about my size, I find it to be an advantage bc it makes me memorable and I much rather be memorable than forgettable. Although, it is super awkward when people ask me if they can pick me up.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Don’t be afraid to fail 2. Get back up quickly
3. Stay curious

Overcoming my fear of failure was most impactful because it allowed me to accept the fact that it’s part of the process and helped me get over it. The ability to get back up from failure quickly has impacted my journey positively by making me resilient and adaptable in challenging times like COVID, the recession, etc. Staying curious helped develop Curl Cult while my salons were shut down during Covid.
