Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janine Wiggins. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Janine, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
The ebb and flow of life bring various circumstances that can potentially paralyze us mentally and emotionally. In these instances, one needs resilience. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from difficult situations. I wish I could say I purchased my resilience from Target, but unfortunately, this characteristic is not sold or gained from education. Resilience comes from knowing one’s purpose and realizing that overcoming adversity must be achieved to accomplish that purpose fully. My resilience comes from my relationship with Jesus Christ (the Son of God) as my personal Lord and Saviour and my understanding of who He called me to be. In James 1:2-4, the Bible states when our faith is tested, perseverance and maturity are produced. This means trials make us stronger. I’ll admit it’s hard to see the good in adversity when you’re going through it, especially since pain typically accompanies hardship. However, Galatians 6:9 reminds me that if I do not give up, I’ll reap the harvest God has for me. In addition to spiritual strength, resilience comes from seeking assistance in the form of support. Support takes the form of therapy, friendships, or family. It is vital to connect with others so you’re not doing life alone. I trust in the Lord and also gleam support from my trusted circle.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a Certified Federal Career Coach and Certified Federal Job Search Trainer. My business, Resumes By Neen, LLC, provides resume and career coaching services for individuals transitioning from a private sector to a government job. We also provide resume services for service members transitioning from the military into a federal or civilian or federal role. My business is set apart from other Resume Services because we specialize in federal government resume writing only. Initially, I began by crafting resumes for all positions; however, niching down allowed me to perfect my craft and stand out as a resume-writing business. Imagine having a heart condition and going to a Podiatrist instead of a Cardiologist. Although the Podiatrist is a licensed physician, he does not know the heart’s ins and outs. He knows some things, but his specialty is feet. On the contrary, a Cardiologist specializes in heart matters and can address specific heart issues. Likewise, a federal resume writer like myself addresses federal job announcements, application processes, federal interviewing and salary negotiation, and best practices of federal resume writing.
I want the world to know that this may be the first time you hear about Resumes By Neen, LLC, but it will not be the last. My business is evolving daily. This is my calling and my purpose. I’m passionate about clients landing federal employment, and I plan to change the world one federal resume at a time.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience, communication, and being coachable are three qualities that have been most impactful in my life’s journey. From my professional to my personal life, these characteristics have allowed me to overcome expected and unexpected events. Resilience, as previously mentioned, is the ability to bounce back from difficult situations. Without it, one remains stuck and unable to move forward. Communication is vital to life’s progression because it helps articulate boundaries, express when one needs help, and resolve conflict. In the words of Nat Turner and John Powell, “Good communication is the bridge between confusion and clarity, and communication works for those who work at it.” Being coachable is essential because I’ve realized I do not know everything. As a result, I seek guidance and learn from those with more experience. Being coachable allows me to learn from the mistakes and successes of others and become better by gleaming from their experiences.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My most significant growth area in the past 12 months is learning to delegate and let things go. I have a type A personality, meaning I am very meticulous, sometimes impatient, organized, and highly concerned with time management. As a planner, I typically have a plan A, B, C, and every letter of the alphabet in place as a fail-guard. In business, I’ve learned that everything does not always go my way, and that is ok. I simply readjust and keep it moving. I’ve learned that I cannot do everything myself, so I must delegate tasks and let things go. Letting go is a gradual process, but I’m getting better. My team is terrific and easily coachable, so they’ve helped me more than they know by learning to trust their knowledge, skills, and abilities. I’m truly grateful that each day teaches me to control what I can and let go of the rest.
