Meet Jannette Kaloustian-crumes

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jannette Kaloustian-crumes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jannette , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

Being creative is a natural talent!
As someone who has been in the entertainment industry since I was 15 years old, I’ve seen so many changes in entertainment in all aspects, ie: dance, music, production, direction, Performance, training, etc.

The one thing since I started teaching voice and piano and music lessons back 29 years ago is that I have the new generations that keep me alive, motivated, and inspired in staying with the times.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

After working as a professional dancer, singer, actress, etc. in the entertainment industry in L.A. where I was born and raised, I moved to Las Vegas 30 years ago where I started performing in shows and where teaching music for me began.

I started teaching in 1995 and then I became the founder, director, instructor and CEO of my own school called Musicology Academy.

musical potential in a supportive and
inspiring environment.

We have had the pleasure of having many of our students throughout the years make it in the entertainment industry.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

First of all you need to LOVE what you do. You also need to have the DRIVE to keep going. Although many life obstacles can discourage you to fulfill your dreams, NEVER GIVE UP! And never do what you yearn to do for someone else. Do it for YOU!

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

My parents were a HUGE factor in my musical knowledge. They had all different genres and nationalities of music playing from when I was born.
The support they provided me was endless. If they hadn’t put me in piano lessons at a very young age, and dance lessons, I wouldn’t be where I am today. That has carried on with me in my adulthood and helps me everyday in my teaching my students and helping them hone their talents.

My husband Oliver Crumes III has been my other support factor!
He, as someone with an enormous status in the entertainment industry himself, has helped with all we do with Musicology Academy. He founded his own Hip Hop Dance department called REVILO Hip Hop (that’s Oliver spelled backwards). And he taught me how to mix and edit music which provided us with opportunities to becone DJs. We are now called DJmusicology and have DJ’d many events, parties for local celebrities, and more.
Now we both not only remain influential in the industry as instructors and coaches, but we feel content teaching and working with all ages and levels and help them achieve their goals.

I was also able to dabble in becoming a Talent agent and casting director which gave me more knowledge of the other side that doesn’t get seen often. The side that provides work in the entertainment industry for singers, dancers, models, specialty acts, etc.
I have been fortunate in being able to cast talent in commercials, ads, and multiple different avenues in the business and continue to do so.
I have also been working with many singers in being their vocal arranger and producer for their original songs.
I take pride in what I do and in Musicology Academy as we just celebrated 14 years in business. And my heart smiles for each of my students progress and accomplishments.
