We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Japel Porter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Japel, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I overcame imposter disorder by having faith in God. I’ve always believed in myself through trials and tribulations that I would prosper. Though social media can play a role in this society, I believe that if you stay true to yourself and don’t get blinded by what others are doing, staying focus and consistent to reach your individual goals, you can achieve anything. The sky is the limit. Never give up on your dreams.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Japel and I’m a photographer/videographer based in Atlanta. I’ve been doing photography for 8 years and I transitioned into creating videos going about 2 years. I love creating photographs because I feel photography is timeless. My work reflects on how I see the world through my eyes. I shoot mainly portraits and landscapes but also do real estate on the side. Since I transitioned into shooting videos as well I’ve filmed basketball, wrestling and I just shot my first short film directed by a good friend of mine that’s coming out soon. The name of the film is called “SHIFT”. I love creating and I have so much in store for the future.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first most important quality is authenticity. Always just be yourself, don’t allow the social media world interfere with what you have going on in your path. Knowledge is key, you really have to know what you’re doing to achieve the photograph or footage that you want. Shoot as much as you can, that’s really the only way you’ll get better. Study the exposure triangle and lightning. I would also say, study the greats who came before you, see if they have any interviews, watch their documentaries.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m looking for upcoming directors in the Atlanta area. Photographers and videographers that are interested in being partners and anyone who wants to collaborate. My instagram is : @Makapelli
