We were lucky to catch up with Jaron Smalls recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jaron, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
The mind not only stores information but also acts as a defense mechanism against past pain or trauma. Life is an exchange of energy—some experiences replenish us, while others deplete us. I realized my environment was not conducive to growth, and the people around me reflected a version of myself I no longer recognized. Change had to start within. To strengthen my mental well-being, I chose to confront my emotions through therapy, prayer, and months of solitary meditation. By regulating my emotions and surrendering to the process, I transformed my life forever.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As an R&B artist, I’ve had the privilege of partnering with renowned labels such as Universal Music Group, New Nairobi Records, Infinite Vision, Crash Dummy Records, RollaCoasta Music Limited, and Rare Sound. I recently released a music video for my single “Nightfall,” shot by Jay Palma, produced by T2 and Alejandro Preschel, and styled by Kobe Donovan. My collaborations extend to leading clothing brands like EGO, Curry Brand, Dstryr of All, Kobe Donovan, and DARTCI. Driven by a passion for storytelling, I have also scored independent films, broadening my creative reach. My work has been featured on platforms including BET, Coast 2 Coast Live, The Charlotte Post, QC Life, Charlotte SHOUT!, Power 98 FM, and KISS FM UK, and I’ve collaborated with impactful organizations such as The Hip-Hop Project (HHP), Universe Website Builder, and Charlotte Rescue Mission. As a self-published author, I am committed to evolving and exploring new opportunities in both creative and entrepreneurial spaces.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
We all remain lifelong students of the industry, regardless of accolades or experience. Researching the music business, social media algorithms, marketing strategies, financial literacy, and consistently networking have been crucial to my success. Partnering with Danielle Murray’s social media management company, Humble Nature Consulting, provided me with an amazing foundation in social media strategy and marketing that substantially increased my core fan base. To grow within the music business, follow the industry closely and study the careers of artists you admire most. Also, research the annual event calendars made by organizations or platforms that host major festivals, shows, and panels for networking purposes.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
As a fellow Maryland native collaborating with UK legends, I would be honored to work with Brent Faiyaz and Lost Kids. Brent’s influence has profoundly impacted my career and redefined the landscape for independent artists for generations to come.
