We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jarrell Hall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jarrell, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
My confidence comes from being stubborn and not knowing how to quit. It’s something my parents said I was born with given the conditions of my birth. It’s always been part of how I operate in personal and professional circumstances. I was born dead. For 8 whole minutes there was no signs of life. When I finally started breathing, the doctors said I would not be able to walk, speak, or learn properly. That didn’t stop me.
In terms of skills. That has always been sort of fun. I love learning new skills and I hate the idea of “you can only master one thing.” It has never fit my lifestyle or how I operate. If I want to learn something; I don’t stop until I master it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Much of my life is shrouded in secrecy due to the nature of my career. But being in the creative field I get to play and get paid for it. Motion Capture especially has allowed me to use all of the skills I’ve cultivated over the last 30 years. I grew up as a creative kid from the Bay Area with a love for technology and anything related to Japan. This led me to martial arts, theater, dance, music, and computers. 30 years later, my life still heavily revolves around these areas just in more of a focused and productive way.
You can see much of my work across video games, movies, TV, and various other forms of media. Recently I’ve been building my two production companies and focusing on creating my first AAA video game.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three main qualities that have been the most impactful in my life? Wow that’s not easy to narrow it down. But if I had to pick 3 it would be stubbornness, listening, and the ability to adapt to any situation. In terms of advice, it pretty much lies in the qualities as well. Find what you want to do, learn all you can, adapt to whatever challenges you face, and be stubborn as hell because you will fail a lot. But that is a huge and needed part of the process.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents definitely played a large role in helping me understand that being different is a super power. And how to embrace that aspect of who I am by turning it into a tool to be used.
