Meet Jaryn Dominique

We were lucky to catch up with Jaryn Dominique recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jaryn, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
I have found my ability to persist and push forward, despite the haters & nay-sayers, mostly was developed with practice. There have been plenty of people in my personal life and professional life who have told me I cannot do something or I’ve been told I need to tone myself down and make myself smaller. These attempts to bring me down would work temporarily. I always cried and would grow doubt in myself. Eventually though, those tears and doubt would shift to motivation. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a strong support network to encourage me when negativity eventually morphed into motivation. I also like to read and listen to inspirational stories to remind me of others who have overcome haters and nay-sayers and ultimately to remind me what I’m capable of. Now that I have more experience, haters can still ruffle my feathers but I’ve come to understand that usually when someone tells you you can’t do something or you can’t behave a certain way…. they’re actually trying to control you. Once I realized that, I was able to take a step back and think “why do they want to control me” and usually it was for their own benefit or comfort and not for my best interests or goals. After I was truly able to understand that it became easier to shake off haters faster, turn their negativity into motivation, and respond, “I can’t do that? Watch me.”

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My business, Deviant Digital Services is exactly what it sounds like. We help businesses with their digital marketing by running digital ads, building websites, optimizing websites for Google (SEO), or social media management. If it’s online we do it!

We work with small businesses directly, but we also offer our services white-labeled and can be integrated as much into your team as you need. We have experience working with many different niches but some standouts are: B2B, Health & Wellness, E-commerce, legal & real estate, bar/restaurant and so many more!

What I’m most proud of for DDS’ brand is that we’re offering a different solution for our customers. Most agencies try to fit you into a package with set services and overpriced rates, then they roll out the same strategy for everyone. Or people try to do it themselves, but let’s be honest no one has time for that and without proper experience you’ll end up wasting a lot of time and money. At Deviant Digital Services you get agency quality for a small business price and a service that meets your custom needs. If you need us to be white-labeled and fully integrated into your business, we’ll make it happen. If you want to just hand over the keys and let us drive while providing easy to understand reporting, we can do that too. DDS empowers our clients to Be A Deviant themselves and choose their own path to fit their specific marketing needs.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’ve always loved writing and journalism and that’s actually what I went to school for. However, in journalism school every professor insisted that print was dying and our only hope was to pivot to digital landscapes. This is what I did and after some research I pivoted my goals to digital marketing. Still I’m grateful for my love for writing as it’s helped me in many projects, campaigns, and communications with large scale clients. I also think my ability to learn and teach myself has helped me greatly along the way. Don’t get me wrong, there have been plenty of people who have helped me or shaped me along the way. However, my most memorable accomplishments were moments when I approached a task, database, or interface I had no idea how to use and everyone was too busy to hand-hold me. So, I sat down and researched it and taught myself. I think my ability to always think “there must be a way” and then also think “I bet I can teach myself this” has helped me grow in many ways in my career. I would say the third quality is my ability to become comfortable with discomfort. By that I mean, pushing my comfort zone and learning how to cope with the constant trial/error of sales. Overcoming imposter syndrome and hosting webinars, conferences, and large scale presentations. Or of course having the courage to take the risk and start my own agency when many friends and family thought I was crazy for leaving behind the guarantee of a steady paycheck. Of course now I know, it was one of the best decisions of my life.

My advice to anyone who is early in your journey is: Find a skill you’re drawn to and practice it until you’re an expert. Get the experience and practice. Then do it your own way, because it doesn’t matter if there are other people in the world who have that skill. What matters is that there is only one YOU with that skill and YOU will do it YOUR way. Never be afraid to roll up your sleeves, study, and learn something. It’s okay if you don’t know everything, but you should never be too afraid to learn. If you wait around for someone to show you, you’ll never stop waiting. Finally, start becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable. Too many people live their lives never leaving their comfort zones. If you want to build something different and accomplish something more, then learn to push your comfort zone. Practice with small things, face small fears. The more you learn to become comfortable with discomfort, you’ll be surprised how far you can go.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes! I am actually looking for new partnerships and collaborations. As I mentioned, one of the niches my agency has been focusing on is white-labeling my services to other agencies. I think this is because I originally developed my career working at large-scale agencies so I understand the struggles these businesses face along with the expectations they hold highest. In short, I know how to speak their language. As such, we’re currently open and looking for new agency partnerships.

If you or your agency is experiencing stalled growth and you’re looking for new resources to grow digitally for your clients, we should talk! Please schedule a complimentary meeting with me and let’s see if we’d be a good fit for each other: https://bit.ly/3Bsn7JP
