Meet Jas Joya

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jas Joya a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jas, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

I really love this question because it serves as a reminder of how far I’ve come in life.

It was a point in my life when I hit rock bottom. My mental health significantly declined as I battled with depression and suicide attempts. How I overcame that was with God. He came to me in a small yet still voice as I was ready to end my life for the final time. At that moment, hearing God’s voice snapped me to the realization of the fact that I was progressively getting worse and that the life I was living was going to end.

Up until that point, even though I had everything materialistic that I wanted as a young woman making her way through life, my life wasn’t the best. I’ve dealt with a not-so-good childhood where I had to deal with abuse. As a young adult, I had to deal with sexual assault and abuse from past partners. I also had to deal with not feeling the best about myself and not feeling good enough or worthy enough to be loved.

Being a writer has helped me with that as it became an outlet for me. And though I have always known since I was a child that my purpose in life was to be a writer, I didn’t know the reasons why. Now as I am older, I realize the reasons why – which is to inspire others to overcome some of the same issues I faced just as I did. I persisted because God gave me life and a purpose in it, so it wasn’t up to me to end it. I persisted because I wanted to see how good it could get and wanted to believe that it could get better. I persisted because I believed that I failed for a reason so I should at least see it (life) through. So even now, that is what I lean on.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

As a writer, director, author, and entrepreneur, I’m all about telling stories that push boundaries and spark conversations. I’m the founder of JEC Productions, where we focus on creating bold, unapologetic films that tackle taboo topics and dive deep into the richness of the Black experience. My work is all about sensual, dark dramas with characters who navigate secrets, lies, and forbidden relationships. For me, storytelling isn’t just entertainment—it’s a way to inspire, challenge, and transform perspectives.

Right now, I’m producing a film to steamroll the official relaunch of the production company. It’s exciting to see the vision become a reality, and I’m even more excited about the projects the company will release in the next year.

Beyond filmmaking, I’m building my brand, Jas Joya, where I share my journey and connect with other creatives. I recently launched my YouTube channel, Jas Joya – Unscripted, to talk about life, being a creative entrepreneur, relationships, and the reality of chasing your dreams which I will share on that platform.

What makes my work special is that it’s deeply personal and rooted in authenticity. Whether through my films, my brand, or upcoming projects, my goal is to inspire people to live boldly, embrace their creativity, and rewrite the rules for what’s possible.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were: being resilient, being creative, and having a clear vision. My journey has been filled with highs and lows. But never giving up, no matter how hard things were, allowed me to understand with success that there would be times when things wouldn’t go as planned. It’s a part of the process. But knowing when to adapt, pivot, and keep going has stood the test of time for me. I understand you can never fail and be worse than you were. After every presumed failure, you can only go up.

Though being creative is at the base of what I do, from every word that I write to finding innovative ways to grow my business, creativity is more than just about art. It’s about thinking outside the box. For anyone early in their journey, I recommend reading widely, watching different genres, taking inspiration from unlikely places, and most importantly giving yourself permission to try new things without the fear of judgment.

Having a clear vision of what I want to achieve has kept me grounded and focused. It’s what helps me set goals and map out the steps to get there. For those just starting out, spend time getting clear on what you truly want—not just what’s expected of you. Write it down, visualize it, and revisit it often. Break it into actionable steps and remember to celebrate the small wins along the way.

My advice for those early in their journey is to focus on these three areas while giving yourself grace as you grow. Surround yourself with supportive people, learn everything, listen as much as you speak, and trust that with time, effort, and belief, you’ll get to where you want to be. Stay persistent, stay curious, and always stay true to yourself.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Most definitely! I’m always open to partnering and collaborating with like-minded individuals who share a passion for storytelling and creative innovation. As a writer, director, and entrepreneur, I’m looking to connect with filmmakers, writers, producers, and creatives who are bold, visionary, and committed to pushing boundaries in their work. Whether it’s collaborating on film projects, sharing expertise, or working together to build something impactful, I’m all about creating opportunities for growth and connection.

I’m also interested in working with brands, organizations, and businesses that align with my vision for empowering untold stories and fostering diversity in storytelling. If you’re someone who values creativity, authenticity, and a fresh perspective, I’d love to hear from you.
