Meet Jashaun Melton

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jashaun Melton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jashaun, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I developed my confidence and self esteem through self love and surrounding myself by people I knew loved me for me. People don’t understand how much your environment can shape the way you go about things, and being around the right people can change your mood so much. Self love comes from finding out things that fit me. Coming into to the hair industry late can take a toll on confidence because most people are already set in with their stylists. With the help of friends and family they gave me the confidence to step out and try new things and one of them was starting my locs business.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Listening, patience and dedication. With any business you need patience you need to know it takes time and nurturing to get a business up and running it just doesn’t happen over night. My favorite saying is that
“Rome was built over night” and neither should your business or anything for that matter. Listening plays a huge part. I work in a shop where there are people who been doing this longer and they help and give out support when needed. If you are just starting or thinking about it just got for it and just give it time give yourself time as well. This isn’t an easy road but it’s worth it.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing is always I mean always supporting me in everything I do. My dad is my number one biggest supporter no matter what I do, and with my dad’s approval nothing can stand in my way. He always says “you’re a Melton” like ford were built strong. He cracks me up with that but how it says it it means something.
