We recently connected with Jaslyn Anderson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaslyn, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I definitely believe honesty is the BEST policy and I will not try and pretend that I have always been confident in myself and in my passion with skincare, beauty industry and in myself. I was a very skinny kid with acne, struggled in school (especially in math) and always the tallest girl at every school I went to. But because I lacked self esteem and confidence I was bullied constantly as a kid, second guess myself on every test and would fail it simply because I did not have self worth and lacked confidence in myself. Studying did me no good if I got in front of the test and questioned everything I knew and went over a million times the night before. I do not think anyone is just born with confidence it’s instilled, whether that is by your parent or parents, friends, God or just yourself the fruit is planted at some point and then it is up to us to water that seed to help it to grow.
First and foremost, of coarse my self esteem and confidence was instilled in me by my parents. I was raised by two BRILLIANT, CONFIDENT and AMBITIOUS black parents. They planted the seed in my siblings and I very early that we can do and be ANYTHING and not to let anyone (even them) stop us or intimidate us from achieving what our heart’s desires are.
They taught me how to command confidence by doing small gestures that when I do them enough it will just come naturally like when I walk in a room smile, hold your head high, look people in the eye and always give a nice firm hand shake and just be YOU. The last part really stuck out to me. When it comes to my business, dating, making friends I ALWAYS only wanted to be true to myself and if Jaslyn was not liked because of that, my parents taught me that was okay I did my job. That if they are meant for me then they will have no problem embracing who exactly Jaslyn is and would not want me to be anything less than that.
The second part of developing your confidence and self esteem is by investing in it. What I mean by that is put your money where your mouth is! If you know you are passionate about the beauty industry in order to be come the BEST and more confident and build on that self esteem invest in learning from the best! Have you ever heard the saying “scared money don’t make no money?” In order to grow in your craft invest in hiring the best of the best to show you how to build on your strengths and help strengthen your weaknesses whatever they are. I hired a business coach in the beauty industry who is EVERYTHING I want to be in this field Sheila Bella has two multi-million dollar businesses in the beauty industry and started an academy “Pretty Rich Bosses” to help teach other business owners how to scale their business, how to be confident in selling and optimizing marketing strategies and how to build and connect with your target audience and give you 1:1 and group coaching help.
I know I am GREAT at makeup. I know I am GREAT at skincare. I know I am GREAT at lashing and customizing my work to be tailored to the client’s specific wants and needs. However, I have never ran a business, I do not know how to market myself well. I do not know how to organize and run a specific strategy to keep clients coming back and how can I be confident in those things if I lack the knowledge? So invest in growing in the areas you lack in. Don’t be scared to be uncomfortable or challenged. A GREAT coach will always push you to your fullest potential and while that does not feel great at first it will when you see the progress and the wins you celebrate about later on.
Lastly, self confidence and self esteem the most IMPORTANT role is you simply believing in yourself even if NO ONE around you believes in you. This is a HARD one I cannot lie. At the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey it was easy for people to say they believe in me but when it came down to it all the friends I invested in their dreams did not invest in mine. They did not buy any skincare products, they did not donate when I needed funds to get into school. In fact outside of my parents, my wife and my siblings nobody financially invested in ANY of my dreams but I was the friend who always put her money where her mouth was.
Quickly I realized being an entrepreneur is a challenging mental game. You have to believe in your brand even when NO sales are coming in. You have to keep marketing and believing in your brand even when all the people you invested in won’t do the same. You have to keep building and speaking life into your brand even when people think you should throw in the towel because they see you spending a lot of money but not making money. This is why entrepreneurship is not for everybody.
To keep going even when everything around you tells you give up is by FAR the hardest challenge and obstacle when it comes to running a successful business. So while it is very easy to let self doubt, fear, anxiety and depression to kick in something deep within you has to take over and say “NO MATTER WHAT I GOT THIS! I don’t care what my situation looks like NOW, I know where I am headed!” You have to have that in you no matter who supports you because I can guarantee almost if not every entrepreneur has gone through a phase where they felt alone and not supported and all they had was themselves. So no point of investing in yourself, or listening to others who instill that confidence in you if you do not know how to possess it simply by yourself FIRST. Doing all these things myself has helped me to grow in my self confidence and self esteem as a business owner, a wife and as an individual. All the things I mentioned can be applied to ALL walks of life not just the business world.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, I’ve found resilience, adaptability, and continuous learning to be pivotal. For those starting out, my advice is simple: embrace challenges don’t avoid them, be open to change, when things fall out of place it simply means things are about to fall into place and never stop seeking knowledge. You should forever be a student of your passion learning new techniques and skills to stay evolving in this ever changing industry. These qualities will carry you far.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
I fully launched my beauty bar October 27th on October 1st I also accepted a position as an Account Manager for Uber managing Drizly clients. If you do not know what Drizly is it is an Uber Eats for adult beverages. Yes you can get your cocktails, wine and all your adult beverages delivered to your door. I had amazing benefits, the pay was nice and the job seemed to have a great culture, no micromanaging and was not a stressful job. The main obstacle was my work schedule. I use to have a Sunday-Wednesday schedule at my previous job but the pay was terrible. Now I have an awesome paying job and I was only off Tuesdays & Wednesdays. But I missed a lot of money and events due to my job. So I prayed and ask God to remove anyone, anything or any situation that will block my business and I from making this a high 7 figure business and low and behold I clocked into work and was told they are dissolving Drizly as a company (after Uber brought them out) and laying off everyone by April 1st. Although I know this was God answering my prayers I broke down and cried because it is so scary leaving your comfort zone to go to walk by faith of the unknown. In the midst of that faith walk I knew I needed help. I never ran my owns business before. So I joined Pretty Rich Bosses where Sheila Bella join forces with her team to teach us marketing strategies, 1:1 and group coaching and networking events. I have noticed a difference already. While this is the scariest part of every entrepreneur’s life I was embracing it. You have to have self belief in yourself regardless of situation and regardless if anyone believes in you or not. I believe there is a time where every entrepreneur is faced with a hard choice of walking out in faith and building their business 100% or sticking with what they know. I am just glad I married someone who supports my dreams no matter what.
