We were lucky to catch up with Jasmin Martinez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmin, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposture Syndrome is something that, I feel, is not linear – it doesn’t just go away. Step 1 is defining it, what is Imposture Syndrome? Per Google, Imposture Syndrome is the persistent inability to believe that one’s success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one’s efforts or skills. For a long time, I survived in flight mode – I stayed busy, I worked 11-15 hour days sometimes, I gauged my success off of how hard/long I worked but had this skewed perspective of the result not being good enough even when I was extremely successful. In my experience, Imposture Syndrome is like a toxic relationship, you know it’s bad for you but in a sick way, it feels impossible to let it go. On a lighter note, I can share how I consciously make efforts to win the battle with imposture syndrome on a daily basis. One thing I’ve learned this year after many conversations with two of my closest friends is, you have to vocalize your thoughts with those you trust. You’ll soon realize you’re, in fact, not alone on exile island everyone has intrusive thoughts. One thing I’m extremely grateful for after starting my own business is having my mornings back – what an amazing opportunity to revamp my routine. I went from waking up at 5a, chugging a pot of coffee and hitting the road while reading all of my emails to now, having time for myself. One practice that has helped me tremendously is committing time to meditating and grounding in the morning. If you’re anything like me, you’ll find reasons why you can’t – I’m here to tell you your meditations don’t have to be perfect, just start with 5 minutes and grow from there. Now when those little negative self-talk comments creep in throughout the day you’re present enough to acknowledge and challenge them. Like, are you really going to bomb that presentation? Are you really going to fail miserably or are you allowing negative self-talk to take over? Being present enough to challenge these thoughts starts with being grounded so you can stop the poison before it seeps through. This leads me to one of the last things I’ve struggled to do but commit to doing, celebrate your wins! No matter how big or small, celebrate them – get the positive juices flowing! I truly believe we set the tone for ourselves, if we think negative thoughts, guess what? You’re probably going to have a bad day… if you persist and stay kind to yourself, you flow into the frequency of gratitude and will welcome great things. I started this with saying Imposture Syndrome is not linear, that remains true, but there’s is light at the end of the tunnel if you put in the efforts to find it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Jasmin and I’m the owner of Local Gem Collective. I’m probably biased but our shop is the cutest! We’re home to over 50 small businesses in Orange County. We’re located in the heart of Orange, Ca. nested in the historic Citrus Building on Chapman and Batavia. I take a ton of pride in creating an experience for our guests in addition to being a retail store, we also host a ton of events and workshops in efforts to build community and network.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I contribute my success to my business acumen, my resilience and my ability to remain hopeful and trust that what is meant to be will be. Don’t let me fool you with that last one, I’m a stress case for about a week before I throw my arms up and say mercy hence, the imposture syndrome… deep down, I have an understanding and know that we are not in control, there is always a plan. The sooner you surrender and stop forcing, everything eventually flows and lands exactly where it’s supposed to.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always down to collaborate! I actually pride myself on my ability to network and collaborate with others. I’ve started by inviting other small businesses to join us for the day in the shop, for example, permanent jewelers, tattoo artists etc. We have a dedicated Creative Space to host things like this. I’m not currently seeking anything in particular, just great humans looking to build community.
