Meet Jasmine Curtis

We recently connected with Jasmine Curtis and have shared our conversation below.

Jasmine, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

If I’ve ever doubted myself, I remembered whose shoulders I am standing on. Who am I to question where God has placed me?

At a young age my parents instilled in me that I could do anything that I put my mind to and I learned to not fear the outcome of doing my best. If I do my best, what else is there to do? As long as I am doing that, I’m taking care of business.

Overcoming doubts, fear, and imposter syndrome is about focusing on your inner self, your inner power, rather than worrying about what those around you may think.

A year before I started my business, AVOCURL, I enrolled in a class called Finance for Entrepreneurs at Cornell University where I completed my undergraduate studies. I was interested in selling the hair products I had been making in my dorm room, and had a genuine curiosity for the course material. Upon meeting me during the first class, the white professor told me that her class would be too hard for me and tried to persuade me to drop it. What, in her eyes, made me different from any of her other students – besides being the only Black woman in the class? I told her she would be seeing me again, and I sat in the front row of her class every day. Years later, after passing the class, AVOCURL ended up on Good Morning America, The View, Glamour magazine, and launched into retailers across the country. That professor may have wanted me to feel small, like an imposter, however, I grounded myself in my knowledge of self. She knew nothing about me, but I knew that whatever I wanted to do I could do it as long as I put my mind to it,

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

At AVOCURL, I’m driven by a mission to make hair care for textured hair truly clean, high-performance, and as natural as the foods we eat. I know firsthand what it’s like to experience your hair breaking and thinning, and feeling helpless as well as it negatively impacting your self esteem. I created this product line so that no one else has to feel like that. I’m currently pursuing education in Herbalism and Trichiology so that I can help my customers more effectively and create customized solutions to their hair, health and scalp issues. Every product I make is made with transparency, love, and the wisdom of science to nourish every curl, coil, loc, and wave with lasting moisture. AVOCURL formulas are crafted from the heart, with 100% plant-based, skin-friendly ingredients that empower stronger, healthier, and smoother hair. With every bottle, my hope is to inspire a natural path to wellness, sustainability, and empowerment for people to thrive.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Discipline, commitment, and curiosity. You need to develop the discipline to keep the promises you make to yourself. You set a schedule, commit to it. Stay focused on your goals and minimize the distractions around you. In my journey, I learned to evolve as I learned more about what worked and what didn’t work in my business. You can’t give up just because something is not happening the way you want. You need curiosity to keep your mind open to the possibilities. Where is there room to grow? What can I learn from this and how can I apply it?

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am always interested in collaborating with passionate, creative people who are also into health and wellness! Send me a dm @avocurl.
