We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasmine Scott Aka JCS. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasmine below.
Jasmine, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
The best way to overcome imposter syndrome is to remember that if you’re weren’t capable, you’d never be doing any part of what you’re accomplishing.
Competition is the worst way to go about anything. Always focus on what you’ve done – and admire it:
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a self published writer going on thirteen years now. I also illustrate my characters, and simply just to create. I recently started making music alongside that. I own my trademark and all the rights to my work.
During my time as a writer, I picked genres and topics most women don’t lean towards – like Sci-Fi and Epic Fantasy. My characters are all either Latino or a POC because that’s what I am. But it’s a diverse collection.
Recently, I released previews for my manuscript, The Fray. I don’t have a release date, but this is a specifically Latino based Dark Fantasy novel – with well over 3.9k reads so far. I’m hoping to reach 10k before the summer is out!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Patience, diligence and integrity.
Can you wait? Is it well done and original? What goal are you trying to obtain?
Slow and steady wins the race. Better to do things truthfully, fully and right, than simply for a buck.
My best advice is to stay true to yourself, and to try everything. If something doesn’t seem right, trust your intuition. And there are no such things as mistakes. Only lessons.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
We all like to pretend we’re not overwhelmed so we can get projects done.
I completely step away from my phone for a while so I can think. I set projects aside and I am realistic with myself. Rest is just as important as progress.
It will still be there. A clear head is better to work with!
