Meet Jasmine Watkins

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmine Watkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jasmine, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?

My mom had a huge influence on me when it comes to understanding why people do what they do. It may be hard to believe but when I was younger, I was bullied about my hair, clothes, and the way I did things. I wasn’t too bothered by it until I started getting older and really understood what the other girls were saying. I came home upset one day and my mom sat me down and said, “they are just mad because you’re light skin and pretty, with long, thick hair. People will say anything because they feel bad about themselves and want what you have.” Ever since that day, I applied that thinking whenever someone tries to put me down and make me feel bad about being myself. It’s tough to remember that sometimes, but having a supportive group that reminds and loves you for your genuine state of being and those words mom spoken all those years ago help me get through whatever anyone says. If you don’t have haters, then you aren’t doing something right. You can’t please everyone and everyone isn’t for you.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m quite the jack of all trades, involved with multiple projects along the east coast. To name a few of my titles, I am a model, actress, brand ambassador, and website consultant. I’m also the Communications Officer of Golden Revelation, a holdings company, that supports your audio, visual, and software needs.
I believe if we actually work together, we all could win. Everyone could play at their strengths, we don’t have to do everything alone. Once you find your team of people with the same goals as you, that’s motivation to keep going.
Now, I have to admit that growing up wasn’t the most ideal, but I used every aspect to shape what I want in life and how I plan to get it. Everything in life is either a lesson or a blessing and it’s our own choice on how we react and what we do with it. If I allowed myself to be consumed by all the negative things that had happened, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’m a normal person with big dreams and refuse to let anything get in the way of them. I do hope my story motivates someone to know that it doesn’t matter your background or what has happened to you; you have the power to do what you want with your life and make the choice to make the best of it.

As far as upcoming events, I will be apart of three website series, five films and several fashion shows (dates TBD)

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The two most important qualities are honesty and genuinity and one area of knowledge is only you know what’s best for you, don’t allow others to create doubt within yourself.

My advice is, even when it gets hard, and at the moment everyone is against you, you must stay true to who you are. Always lead, never follow because no one knows where they are going. Create your own trend. There are haters everywhere but that means you are doing something right. When you stay true to yourself, you will gain more respect than you think. And as much of a cliché as it sound, be the change you want to see.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

One of my biggest growths over the past twelve months is not being afraid to do what I want in my life, even when there are people trying to use what I do to destroy my character and true intentions. My second biggest growth is cutting people off from having direct access to me. It’s not necessarily that they have done anything wrong, but I understand the toll it takes on me to worry about others when they aren’t ready to take the steps they need to grow themselves.
