Meet Jasmine Wesley

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmine Wesley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jasmine, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Overcoming imposter syndrome has been one of my biggest challenges as a singer/songwriter. When I first started, I was paralyzed by fear and self-doubt, terrified of singing in front of people, and constantly feeling inadequate. My friends, family, and fans believed in me, but I struggled to see myself the way they did. Writing my upcoming single, ‘Lentes Rosados,’ was a turning point for me. The song reveals my honest assessment of how others see me versus how I see myself, and I was able to find healing in that. I believe vulnerability is the first step to healing, which is why I choose to write songs this way, in hopes that others might find healing too.

It’s important to note that imposter syndrome comes from comparing ourselves to others, which is a very easy thing to do on social media. I go live on TikTok often and I always share these words with my community: ‘You are amazing, you are needed in this world, and you are loved.’ I say ‘You are needed’ because it’s something I’ve had to remind myself of over and over again. We each have a gift, a song, a smile that someone needs, and it becomes more harmful for us not to share who we are with the world than to shine our light, as imperfect as we may feel.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a Dominican-American singer/songwriter who grew up in Grand Rapids, MI, and now calls Los Angeles home. My journey into music truly took off when my brother encouraged me to move to LA to pursue my passion. Despite a paralyzing fear of singing in front of others, I began performing at local cafes in LA to confront and overcome my insecurities. Balancing these performances with full-time jobs for years, I eventually made the decision to fully commit to my music career, saving up for a year and quitting my management job at Jersey Mike’s to focus solely on my passion.

What excites me most about my work is the connection I’ve built with my fans. Through my music, particularly my Spanglish covers, I’ve created a space where people from different cultures and backgrounds can come together and feel a sense of belonging. My upcoming EP, ‘Nostalgia,’ which will be released on July 12, is a collection of popular cover songs that have gone viral on my social media. To celebrate, I’m hosting an EP release party on July 14, where I’ll be performing these covers live, along with some unreleased music.

Looking ahead, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be releasing more original music throughout the year, including my single ‘Lentes Rosados.’ This song, like much of my work, is deeply personal and speaks to overcoming imposter syndrome and self-doubt. My goal is to inspire others to embrace their vulnerabilities and find healing through music, just as I have. Through consistent engagement with my community, whether it’s live performances or TikTok ‘lullaby lives,’ I strive to create an authentic and supportive space for everyone who listens to my music.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are patience, trust, and commitment. Patience with myself was crucial as I navigated the transition from a full-time job to pursuing my dream as an artist. It took time to develop my skills, grow in confidence, and refine my vocal abilities—it certainly didn’t happen overnight.

Trust has also played a significant role. Trusting that I have everything I need to fulfill my dreams, and believing that opportunities and people will come into my life at the right moment, has been essential. I’ve learned that maintaining peace comes from surrendering to the process and trusting that everything is in God’s hands.

Commitment has been another key quality. It’s easy to dream, but challenging to develop your craft when you’d rather go out with friends or watch TV. What makes commitment even harder is not knowing when all your hard work will pay off. Understanding that success in my career could manifest this year or ten years from now is both encouraging and daunting. That’s why embracing the journey, with all its challenges and setbacks, is crucial for me. I’m doing my best to enjoy each step because it’s through this process that I’m becoming the person capable of achieving my dreams.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

In the past 12 months, I’ve seen a lot of growth in different areas. While I’ve improved vocally, gained more confidence, and grown my social media presence, the biggest growth has been internal—believing in myself. I used to be really afraid of failure. But early last year, I realized that success doesn’t come without failure; it’s part of the process. So, I committed to failing as fast as possible because I knew what was on the other side.

Once this shift happened, I started posting and showing up online as my true self, not just what I thought people wanted to see. I really believe that being honest with myself is what attracted more people to my art. They connected with the real me, and that’s been incredibly rewarding.
