We were lucky to catch up with Jasmine Wilks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
Very good question! I have dealt with a lot of adversity in the form of “haters” and “nay-sayers” since I started coaching. At first, it really got to me. It had me questioning by abilities as a coach and even had me doubting myself in all areas of my life. After much prayer and remembering that this gift of coaching was from God, I started to silence the negativity and almost using the doubters and haters as fuel. Now being a more seasoned coach, I am able to completely ignore any false narratives, nay-sayers and/or haters by having tunnel vision and focusing on just nurturing my craft and progressing my athletes.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a personal track and field trainer and a newly appointed collegiate track coach at Concordia University Ann Abor. I have been coaching since 2015. I primarily worked with high school athletes but most recently I am training middle school age and soon will be at the collegiate level. I am so passionate about the sport and young people as a whole, and am fascinated with developing athletes to be able to reach their full potential on and off the track.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three skills that were most impactful my journey are resilience, focus and confidence. My advice to coaches looking to improve on the those three skills are honestly just going through different situations and being able to not just go through them, but GROW through them. By gaining experience through different situations they will organically gain resiliency and confidence.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth in the past 12 months has been my faith. I have been through a lot of trials in regards to my coaching, but have been focus on my faith to carry me through all the hardships. My Faith has been my anchor. Whether dealing with things out of my control, adversaries, or just battling with personal issues, I tried to always remember something bigger and better is on the way. Having this faith has propelled me into amazing opportunities in my career this past year.
