We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmyne King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmyne , thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I think my optimism comes from knowing that everything I want out of this life is already mine. The successful business, the beautiful store front, it’s not a matter of “if”but more so a matter of when. Nothing in life is unattainable. Once you develop a certain mindset and start showing up as your highest self, you can seriously do anything you put your mind to.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about your business ?
My brand Oshun specializes in luxury lash strips that mimic the look of lash extensions. Our lashes are a cheaper alternative for those who are budgeting or those who need a break in between lash services. Our customers have been able to get a years worth of wear from our lashes so the quality speaks for itself. We launch our Best Selling Collection at the end of March and will be introducing Lash Clusters very soon!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Marketing, customer service, and financial literacy have been the 3 areas of knowledge that have been most impactful in my journey. I definitely advise those who are just starting out to do your research and educate yourself because these 3 elements can make or break your business.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m feeling overwhelmed I like to take a step back and find ways that I can break tasks into smaller proportions. As a small business owner, I don’t have a team to work different areas of my business. From marketing to shipping orders to finances, I do it all myself. It can get overwhelming which is why organization is key. I keep a planner with deadlines and important dates as well so that I can be as proactive as possible.
I think it’s also important to take breaks. I used to be so hard on myself when I would take a hiatus from my business but it’s so necessary sometimes. Life happens and I learned that I can’t show up for my business if I can barely show up for myself. You’re not wrong for putting yourself first . I really can’t stress it enough. Each time I took a break I came back so much better and the growth that came with it showed through my business.
Lastly I love to meditate. I know it’s not for everyone and it actually took me a while to get it down but it is one of the best stress relievers. Just take about 15-20 minutes out of your day and practice breathing exercises. I feel like it completely resets my nervous system and I feel so at peace. These few things have helped me tremendously when I feel the weight getting heavy and start feeling overwhelmed with all the tasks it takes to run a successful business.
