We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Carter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being the only one in the room makes it evermore clear that I am unique. My presence, my lived experience and my talent is unique. Furthermore, I am in a position to share what I possess with a purpose that’s greater than myself.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am currently focused on finding my “why” as I feel it has changed throughout phases of my life. One of the ways I decided to solve this is by sharing my knowledge/expertise with the intention of developing other creatives that share a story similar to mine. I just wanted to tell stories in the most creative way and with outreach that covered the globe. I always thought that would be through the silver screen but my journey has proven there are more ways. Now I want to shed light on the various paths people can take using their art and the success they can achieve.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I actively practice 3 areas of focus: prayer, patience, and persistence. I am a spiritual person so, when I pray, I’m simply speaking positivity into myself and manifesting my goals. It’s a must to have patience while improving yourself and bringing your goals into fruition – the right opportunities will present themselves and a time that might not feel good, but a time that is best for you. The 3 P’s work hand-in-hand so you must stay persistent. If you want it to happen, make it happen!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My wife’s support has been a tremendous gift as I navigate defining and redefining my goals. She has found the perfect balance of encouraging me and challenging me. I dream big and she is able to keep me grounded to where I can focus on realistic building blocks to help be get to where I want to be. That is truly invaluable.
