We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Chase a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I feel like theres a version of myself out there, not judging, but rather observing how I behave when the going gets rough, when my back is to the wall, when soul crushing failure looks me in the eye. It is really important to me to stare right back at it and stand my ground. I think of that higher self watching me get back up again and again. And I feel thats something to be proud of.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a designer. I know that’s a very loose term, but in a way I am not entirely attached to any one discipline. There is a crossover between, interior, architectural, product, fashion, and even graphic design. I find myself in the middle of it all. Although my boutique firm Jason Chase Design specializes in unique Residential and Commercial interiors, I also have an in house custom fabrication shop called WeldWood Furniture and Design that creates one of a kind furniture and architectural features. Anything from Artistic railing to craft signs to monumental sculptures. Because of my multifaceted skillset I am also often asked to help design and develop consumer products, graphics, branding. I also design custom fashion and apparel. I am currently working on a line of custom furniture to be presented in designer showrooms in Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I have always nurtured my inate passion of working with my hands, creating art, and developi g technical skills with various tools that fit with my current occupation. Drawing, sculpture, using imaging software, mechanical tools and equipment. I have found that no matter how much you know about your craft, how hard you work, how willing you are to grow and learn and practice, there is more to it if you want to make it your business. You need to know how to get other people to first of all know you exist, and second, pay you for your product or seevice. If you don’t already know people who really understand marketing, sales, and the operation of your business that can assist you, it can be very tough. When first starting out, you need a very firm process to get the word out about your product or service and close deals. I never knew
who my potential customers were when I first went in to business, I thought they would hear about me online somehow, and when the phone didn’t ring for a year I realized I needed to pound away at every possible way to reach as many qualified clients as possible and be absolutely relentless and creative when it comes to putting myself out there.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am a creative. I am constantly producing art, design, fashion, architecture. I have had my hands full for years producing peice after piece. The whole time I have been DREAMING of that other half unicorn partner that knows the other side of the coin, the business side. I am a great designer, I am an O.K. business person. A great business partner that could elevate my brand would be devine. Aside from that,I am always looking to partner with restaurant and hospitality groups who want to stand out by utilizing design to stand out from the crowd and make a statement. I love creating jaw dropping spaces that make people instantly pull out their cameras!
