We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Flame a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
My confidence and self-esteem was developed over time through consistent action, overcoming challenges, and surrounding myself with people who believed in me—even when I didn’t fully believe in myself.
At first, it came from small wins—showing up, learning new skills, and seeing growth. Whether it was in martial arts, sports, or public speaking, every time I pushed past fear or discomfort, my confidence grew. Mentors played a huge role too; they helped me see strengths I hadn’t recognized. Over time, I learned that self-esteem isn’t about being perfect—it’s about knowing your worth, learning from failure, and showing up with integrity.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Jason Flame—martial artist, business owner, community leader, and podcast host. I’ve been teaching martial arts in Moorpark since 1994, and what excites me most is helping kids and families grow in confidence, discipline, and self-respect. Our school, Moorpark Karate & Krav Maga, has become more than just a place to learn self-defense—it’s a home for personal development and community connection.
What’s special about what I do is seeing the transformation in our students—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Whether it’s a shy child stepping onto the mat for the first time or a teen learning leadership as a junior instructor, those moments of growth are powerful. I also love mentoring other school owners through speaking and consulting, helping them succeed in the same way I’ve been blessed to.
Beyond the dojo, I host a podcast that highlights positive leaders from all walks of life, sharing real stories to inspire others. We’re also continuing to grow locally—recently expanding into partnerships with Country Harvest, a community-driven business near our school that hosts fundraisers, team nights, and family events.
Looking ahead, we’re gearing up for our Summer Martial Arts Program in Moorpark, which offers a fun, structured alternative for kids when school’s out. We’re also expanding our karate programs to better serve busy families with kids who need positive role models and healthy routines.
Whether you’re a parent looking for “karate classes in Moorpark” or someone seeking a deeper sense of purpose, what we do is about building better people—and that never gets old.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey were consistency, relationships, and self-awareness.
1. Consistency: I wasn’t always the most talented or naturally gifted, but I showed up every day. Whether it was training, coaching, or business, consistency built trust, habits, and results over time.
Advice: Don’t underestimate the power of showing up. You don’t have to be perfect—just be present and put in the work regularly. Small actions repeated consistently beat big efforts done occasionally.
2. Relationships: From mentors to community members, the people I surrounded myself with shaped my growth more than any book or strategy.
Advice: Be intentional about building real connections. Listen more than you talk. Offer value first. And never burn bridges—some of your biggest opportunities will come from people, not plans.
3. Self-awareness: Understanding my strengths, weaknesses, and values helped me make better choices and stay aligned with my purpose—even when things got hard.
Advice: Take time to reflect, journal, or ask for honest feedback. The better you know yourself, the clearer your path becomes. You can’t lead others well until you know how to lead yourself.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes, I’m always open to partnering or collaborating with like-minded individuals who are passionate about community, personal growth, and making a positive impact—especially in areas like youth development, martial arts, fitness, leadership, or local business initiatives in Moorpark. I enjoy working with people who value authenticity, consistency, and service to others.
