Meet Jason Fun

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jason Fun. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Jason, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?

Leaving my day-job to become a full-time magician was a HUGE risk for my family. My wife and I have 4 kids so it was a choice that wasn’t taken lightly. There were months where I would make more money as a magician versus my corporate desk job. But we didn’t take the risk until I got some great advice from my mentor. He said that we live in a time and country where we have so many opportunities and resources. He said if things don’t work out right away, I can always get another “job” and that there are also programs out there to help people bounce back on their feet if need be. My wife was in full support of the potential we had from being full-time performers, and we realized my mentor was right. We could always go back to “the way we were before” if our plans didn’t pan out. So, in reality, we had nothing to lose and so much to gain!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m a full-time magician and entertainer based in Utah. I’ve been dubbed as Utah’s Funnest Magician! While my bread and butter is perfoming kids’ and family shows, I also perform shows for just adults too! In addition to performing magic shows, I’m also a magic teacher for kids, as I am a licensed presenter of the educaitonal Discover Magic curriculum. I run my own summer magic camp, called Wizard Boot Camp, and I’ve been fortunate to have won a few awards from the Utah Valley University, the non-profit organization Best Seat in the House, and even from the founders of Discover Magic for my magic classes and contributions to the program. Most recently, I have also been asked to speak and present at magic conventions around the country to teach other magicians and performers my tips and tricks on how to perform for children and families!

While Utah is my home base, and the majority of my shows are here, I perform in neighboring states, and have even been hired by companies to perform magic out of the country! My family has also caught the entertainment bug as my wife and kids run a a foam party business called Foamtastic Bubbles, and they are about to open a new educational business about dinosaurs called Utah Dino Tracks. I help them out when I can, but performing magic shows and teaching magic classes has really occupied most of my time throughout the year.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

In reality, I think there is only one quality that really matters and is the most important. And that is ACTION! You need to take action. You can aquire all the knowledge you want, plan all you want, but if you don’t take any tangible action then the rest is os no use. There is never a perfect plan (or in my case, a perfect show) that can be written out. You need to DO to see what works and what doesn’t. Yes, plan things, and get advice from others who have gone before you…. but you will always find you are making changes anyway fit your specific needs or style. So just take action now. Do, make corrections, and do again. Then repeat.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I’m always looking for people to collaborate with. In the entertainment business, I’m not always available for people’s events (because I’m already booked), or I may not be a good fit for their event. But chances are, I know someone who can fill in for me or who would be better for you! There are a couple of local magicians that I trust will deliver a great show, and I also know several world-wide that I can connect you with. I’ve also made friends with several other performers who are not magicians that i can refer you to! I have a reptile guy, jugglars, clowns, arealists, comedians, etc. I’m always looking at growing my network and collaborate with others to provide an amazing experience to our clients!
