We were lucky to catch up with Jason Heath recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I draw significant inspiration from Seth Godin’s writings, particularly his insights on “looking like a professional.” I strive to embody this philosophy in my work ethic. Each day, I rise, settle in, organize myself, and tackle the most challenging task—or “eat the frog,” as the saying goes. Despite the often unpredictable nature of creative work, I aim to maintain consistent work hours. This structure helps me navigate the volatility inherent in my field.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As a double bassist, my mission is to unite and elevate the global double bass community by fostering a vibrant ecosystem where bassists of all levels can thrive. Through my podcast, YouTube channel, and various initiatives, I strive to elevate the profile of double bass events, facilitate meaningful discussions on technique and career development, and share knowledge from leading industry professionals. I am committed to supporting double bass creators, bridging gaps between different schools of thought, and inspiring the next generation of bassists.
My goal is to create a supportive, inclusive, and forward-thinking community that celebrates the rich history of the double bass while embracing its evolving role in music. By showcasing diverse career paths and opportunities, I aim to foster an environment where innovation and tradition coexist, ultimately contributing to the growth and advancement of the double bass community worldwide.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I blended my experience with double bass and education, communicating it to an online audience. I started this journey with my podcast nearly 20 years ago. The best advice I have for folks early in their journey is to find something that fascinates you and pursue it. It will likely work out, and you’ll be much happier doing that than chasing something purely for financial gain.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I try to make sure that I am I have at least one day a week purely for fun. I like to go on long walks with the dog, explore the city, and do something out of my regular routine. If at all possible, I try to take weekends off unless I am performing concerts.
