We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jason Heath. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jason below.
Hi Jason, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
I played three sports a year in high school, so most of my self-discipline growing up came from managing schoolwork and my daily chores. I quickly realized I had to be self-motivated in order to keep my grades up, participate in sports, and manage other life duties in order to be a successful student. Most of these habits carried over into college, and now I use them daily as the CEO and founder of Broadway on Bankehad. Self-discipline is one of the pillars an entrepreneur needs because it helps “drive the engine” when there are long days or times when things may not be going as planned; this skill has helped me to stick to the course.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I had a vision about establishing Broadway on Bankhead long before now; back in 2019 I created Broadway on Bankhead, LLC. It was born from my desire to work with youth, provide creative outlets to thespians and theatre lovers, and foster an environment where people can come and experience Broadway-level productions. I have always been motivated to accomplish this dream, and I have taken many risks to get here.
My current goal is to get the word out about our black-box theatre so that working families can experience their students turning talents into skills. Our theatre is special because it’s a niche concept, unlike any other theatre in Atlanta. We are located in a residential space, which creates a “family feel.” We offer charcuterie boards and sparkling cider served at your table by a hostess. We have young actors/actresses in the productions who are a part of our new Theatre program Class. Our “big shows on a small stage” are not only funny and captivating, but they are relatable and comfortable, just like home.
We are currently rehearsing our latest production, OZ, based on your favorite story, “The Wiz,” and are excited to take the Bankhead community with us down the yellow brick road!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that I feel have been the most important in my journey would be:
1) the will to learn,
2) consistency, and
3) creativity.
I would advise anyone who is in the beginning stages of their journey to find their “why” and refer back to it when needed. It is always beneficial to remember where you came from to assist you in where you are trying to go. It keeps you grounded.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Marketing has been our biggest challenge thus far. How do we market ourselves to a Community that may not know we are here or that may not be familiar with theatre or theatre etiquette? How do we set ourselves apart from other theatres and provide a quality experience in a metropolitan area that still has a hometown feel? How do we encourage attendance and provide value to this particular area in a way that exhibits our values and demonstrates our worth as a small, yet up-and-coming business?
