Meet Jason & Heather Colby

We were lucky to catch up with Jason & Heather Colby recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jason & Heather, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

When we first started this company, it was indeed with the intentions of disrupting the broken industry of mold testing, and shedding light on limitations and consistent problems with the building industry as a whole through compassionate education. This means that we developed a whole new way to inspect a home for mold, and a whole new format of inspection reports that was unlike any others at the time. This admittedly is not an easy task to accomplish, when everyone has become so accustomed to the way things have been done so far. However, we stayed vigilant because we knew that our way of doing things was more accurate, and at the end of the day, the right thing to do. Before long, we were hearing that other companies had started to integrate our testing and inspection practices. The information that we diligently gave away for free to our clients slowly became more and more mainstream and agreed upon. This was confirmation that we were on the right track, and gave us the strength to persevere.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

We are so passionate about helping families keep themselves and their homes healthy. We do this through the most thorough inspections, freely educating people with as much accurate information as we can, and providing the utmost empathetic customer service.

A recent story I’d love to share is about a young couple looking to buy their first home, with the catch being that they wanted a home with no mold. We inspected several houses they were interested in, each one exhibiting many of the problems we see all the time. The couple became familiar with these issues and were actually able to begin to recognize these problems on their own after we pointed them out in the first few homes we inspected. The last home we inspected happened to belong to a former client of ours for whom we had inspected their house five years prior. As we walked around this home together, the couple was able to recognize that the repairs I had recommended over and over again had been successfully completed in this house. The end result? The house was by and large free from mold, and the couple ended up purchasing it. This was such a huge confirmation to us that the recommendations we offer really do work, and if you follow our recommendations and perform proper cleaning and maintenance, it is indeed possible to have a home that is free of mold.

In other news, we are excited to share that we are in the process of expanding the company, with plans to hire more employees and open new locations. We have recently designed a fresh new logo, new uniforms, and a new website. We have opened a new department in the company to allow more education on proper techniques for mold remediation and detoxing from mold after removing it. We are planning to open a laboratory to analyze mold samples, and we plan to open several new locations in the next year.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

There are many qualities that were impactful in this journey, but since we have to narrow it down to just three, we feel these were the most valuable.

The ability to right wrongs – everyone is going to make mistakes along the way. True success comes from how you handle those mistakes.

The ability to listen – your clients will tell you what they need, what they are concerned about, and what you can do better if you listen carefully. If you’re open to allowing changes based on the feedback you get, your business will continue to grow and fill the needs of your clients.

Balance – your business is only as healthy as you are. If you are burnt out, disconnected, or struggling with other relationships, it will show up in your success. Always organize your life around ways to support yourself, your family, and your wellbeing, and you’ll be able to show up in the best way possible in your business.

If you’re just starting out, remember to stay consistent and do your best in every situation. Each time you practice a skill or choose a better outcome in tough situations, it makes the next time that much easier. There will always be challenges no matter what stage of business you’re in. It’s important to remember that it’s not a race, and to enjoy the journey and the personal growth it provides along the way.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Especially with our expansion plans, we are in need of many people. First, we will be looking to add new employees as our demand grows. For the first time in six years, we have begun to actively advertise, as up until now we have been a referral based business through mostly word of mouth. Because we believe that doing the inspections and testing and also doing the repair work is a conflict of interest, we will be looking for referral partners. We definitely prefer companies to partner with who employ the most effective and natural solutions, have impeccable attention to details, and who provide excellent customer service. Finally, because we are looking to open new locations, we need reliable employees in other areas, and even in other states!
