We were lucky to catch up with Jason Howard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re very focused on here – improving our ability to make decisions. Everyday, we’re faced with decisions that can impact the future of our careers, businesses, relationships and more and so one of the most impactful areas for personal development, in our view, is decision-making. Can you talk to us about how you developed or improved your decision-making skills?
The development of a skill such as decision making comes with time. To me it’s a balance of trusting your experience, your instinct and trusting data. Through my time in the music industry I’ve made decisions from a consumer stand point, I try to keep my personal opinions out of it. If I choose a artist to work with, I’m thinking – will consumers like the look of the artist, will the artists name resonate and will they like the sound of the music.
Even when picking a song that I feel has potential to grow, I think about the potential fan base for the song and how easy or hard it will be to reach them. Music has so many genres and sub-genres these days that any song has a group of people that would potentially listen to it. In some cases, that audience is in different countries so plotting a plan to reach them can be difficult. I’ve learned to trust data from past campaigns and similar sounding artists along with my natural instinct to make the right decision.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Jason Howard, I go by my childhood nickname “Jase”. I’m and Music Marketer and Talent Manager. I’ve worked with and partnered with a number of artists in the Atlanta area and beyond. My team and I have thrown a number of successful events in the Atlanta area over the past 3 years and we plan to do a lot more.
I’m very exited about the new clients and staff that I’ve been able to bring on board over the past 3 months. On the staffing side, I’ve added my long time business partners Yaquan Hunter and Nikki “BoujieBoss” Miller to the team officially. Yaquan will A&R for a few clients and be the Head of Label Services and Artist Revenue, he’s seasoned in his approach and is a great talent finder. Ms. Miller will Head PR & A&R, she has years of industry experience with high profile clients and will be a huge asset. Lastly, I’ve added Kris King to be the VP of Music Creation/Production. King is an accomplished Streaming Executive and Record Producer who is masterful in the studio working with artists.
Client wise I’m proud to announce the additions of Mori Briscoe – a buzzing drill rapper out of NYC, BlakRain – a smooth singer with a unique sound, 458LilZay – a young Atlanta artist who is on the cusp of stardom, Kai Ghost – a multitalented R&B singer well known for winning Season 3 of the Netflix show “The Circle”, and Kiami Davael – a fantastic R&B singer well known for being the actress who played Lavender in the classic movie “Matilda”.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The 3 qualities that helped me succeed were:
1. Not being afraid to try. Everything won’t pop off the first time you try it, understand you will learn as you go and get better with attempts. Everyone says that you get better with time, but if you spend your time doing nothing you wont get better.
2. Always trying to learn more. Like i said, trying things help you learn, but researching and gaining knowledge on what you are doing before and after doing it helps you learn more. You need book smarts and real life experience to guide you.
3. Self belief. You got this! if this is truly what you want to do you will sacrifice until you succeed.
My advice would be to focus on your goals, you may have to go without things that you want personally or material wise. Sacrifice is key.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents have always been great partners. They were always skeptical in everything I’ve ever wanted to do but if I put in the work and showed them that I was serious they have always backed me up and cheered me on. I’ve been investing in music and music equipment since I was 15 years old. They’ve always understood my passion for music and have helped me however they could.
