We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jason Irving. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jason below.
Jason , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
That’s a great question. I would say that it has developed over the course of many years, and is primarily driven by my faith. I would like to think that we are all on a journey in this regard, and it began with my realization that none of us are here by accident. It would take me a long time to detail all the reasons I discovered this to be true, but once I knew that I was here by design and not by coincidence, that gave me the freedom to really explore my what my true purpose is.
I also think we have many purposes, depending on how we are defining it. What is my purpose as a father? A husband? In my work and creative outlets? Finding our purpose is not simple or limited.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I guess I have two passions, really. I am a Financial Advisor by day and a musician by night (and sometimes weekends). I own a family run RIA firm called Irving Planning & Investments, and have been working in the Financial Services industry since 2008.
I’ve also been playing music in various capacities since the late 90’s, where I played in rock and pop-punks bands. Currently, my time is spent on a solo electronic pop, Retrowave/Synthwave project called The Co$t of Life that I began in 2022.
I’m passionate in my work as a Financial Advisor because I love helping people develop goals and plans that set them and their families up for financial success now, and into the future. I love studying economics and the markets, and the constantly changing industry always keeps me on my toes.
Regarding my music, I love the creative outlet it provides, and I’m always learning new ways to improve. I’m excited about the new technology that allows me to record at home now, and the control over the process that it allows me.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First, I think that resiliency is a quality that can’t be underestimated. To have grit and be able to endure in times in adversity is something that seems to be fading. When you take things far too personally or are offended by even the smallest of slights, I don’t see how you can operate in the real world. A phrase I heard a lot growing was “The world does not revolve around you”, and that is still good advice. We also have no idea what is going on in other people’s lives, so it’s not really beneficial to internalize everything.
Second, don’t be afraid to take chances. Sure, we might fail, and inevitably will in life at certain times. But we certainly won’t ever succeed if we aren’t willing to risk failing.
Lastly, be able to adapt to your environment. I was lucky to have some amazing customer service training early on in my career, and it’s essential to be able to adapt to different people in different situations. Always be respectful and ask a lot of questions.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I think time management is probably my biggest obstacle. My wife and I have two elementary school kids and run a business, so finding time free time to do things for ourselves is a challenge.
Music is a fantastic outlet for me, but I’m mostly able to work on this at night when the kids go to bed. I do most of the work myself, so finding the time to not only write and record my songs, but ways to promote it without eating into all of the other areas of my life is not an easy task.
I’m trying to get others involved in helping me, but it takes time to find and build those relationships.
