We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Marc Schoener a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason Marc, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My father. He is an immigrant from Israel that moved out here as a teenager. He barely spoke English, but put his head down and managed to get into the prestigious Air Force Academy. After he retired from the military, he became a math teacher and tutor. He would work 14-16 hours a day 5-6 days a week to make sure that we were able to have a roof over our heads. Even after he retired, he still tutors kids that are struggling with math.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I started my production accounting firm, Ten Key Accounting, ten years ago and have been grinding out to navigate the ups and downs of the entertainment industry. I take pride in my work and have established a strong reputation. I have since dipped my toes into producing with my production company, Ten Key Films. I am still writing and and working on getting those projects off the ground. I am proud of the team I’ve built around me and take pride in giving those that want to do production accounting the opportunity to learn and grow. I am very excited for the possibilities for my company in 2025.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Hard work, focus and humanity. As I was coming up as an assistant accountant, I made it a point to learn everything I could, take on as much as possible and put in the hard work. Also, I never forgot to treat people with the dignity and respect they deserve. When I was in film school, we were told that today’s PA could be tomorrow’s executive, so treat everyone with kindness. My advice is to take it all in and keep learning and growing. If you become stagnate, opportunities will pass you by.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
The entertainment industry is going through some major challenges right now. 2023 saw a complete stoppage of work because of the SAG and WGA strikes, and even though the were resolved by the end of the year, the impact sent shockwaves through the business. We are seeing the end of the streaming bubble where projects were being greenlit off of a half baked pitch. I am having to adjust my overhead and the type of projects we take on. I am hopeful that 2025 will find a balance.
