We recently connected with Jason Mitchell Kahn and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason Mitchell, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
I developed a routine during the pandemic that I’ve kept up because it serves me so well. Every morning I wake up, brew a cup of coffee and get back into bed and read for thirty minutes. I do not let myself look at my phone. If I do I start seeing all sorts of notifications related to work, and it’s important I carve out this time. Then I walk my dog and listen to a podcast. Having that hour before dialing into the work ahead makes me feel more grounded and helps me feel like I have more of a work/life balance.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I began working full time as a wedding planner after publishing GETTING GROOMED: THE ULTIMATE WEDDING PLANNER FOR GAY GROOMS, published by Chronicle Books. I am now in the seventh year of running my own namesake business. I’ve been fortunate enough to have my work featured in Vogue, The New York Times, PEOPLE and Brides Magazine named me one of the Best Planners in the country. Before I launched Jason Mitchell Kahn & Co., I served as the resident Wedding Planner for Shiraz Events overseeing the company’s market in New York, Los Angeles and London. Before I really got into events I come from the theatre world, and I use that experience from my education and career in everything I do as a planner. I live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with my dog Barnaby.
Jason’s passion for weddings stay alive by attracting cool couples that really excite him!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Listening-it’s so important that you truly listen to your clients, your employees and the universe.
Multitasking- this was really honed for me in my early days at a restaurant and has been invaluable ever since.
Timing- this comes from having been in theatre but is so crucial in events. As a planner you always want to be ahead of the crowd to sense where they’re at and cueing the next moment before there is ever too much idle time.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Both of my parents were passionate about their careers and working for themselves, so I definitely inherited that. They taught me the importance of both working hard and liking your work.
